Minocin Information:
What is Minocin?
Minocin is an antibiotic that can be used to treat many different kinds of bacterial infections, including infections of the skin, urinary tract, and respiratory system. It may also be used to treat gonorrhea, chlamydia, tick fever, and severe acne. It works by killing the bacteria causing the infection.
How do I take Minocin?
Dosages for the Minocin drug vary by patient and medical condition, so follow your doctor’s instructions carefully when taking this medication. Take the prescribed amount of Minocin without food and at least two hours after or one hour before a meal. Do not stop taking this medication before finishing the prescribed course of treatment, even if your symptoms go away. If you stop taking this drug early, you increase your risk for developing an antibiotic-resistant infection.
Before taking Minocin, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other medications
- You have a sulfite allergy
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements, especially penicillin antibiotics or birth control pills
- You have asthma
- You have kidney or liver disease
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Minocin?
Mild side effects of Minocin may include dizziness, tiredness, skin or vaginal irritation, discoloration of skin or nails, muscle or joint pain, nausea, or upset stomach. If you have any bothersome side effects while taking the Minocin drug, tell your doctor, but do not stop taking the medication unless instructed to do so. In very rare cases, Minocin may cause serious side effects such as flu symptoms, stomach cramps, chest pain, an irregular heartbeat, weight gain, changes in urination, vision problems, or a severe skin reaction. If you have any side effects that concern you, get medical attention right away.
What if I forget to take a dose of Minocin?
Missing a dose of Minocin puts you at greater risk for developing an antibiotic-resistant infection, so try to take this medication at the same time every day to help you remember. If you do forget, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If there is only a short amount of time until your next dose, skip the missed one and continue with your normal dosage schedule.
How do I store Minocin?
Minocin should be kept at room temperature (between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit) and stored in a tightly-sealed, light-resistant container. Even if the container is childproof, you should still keep this medication out of reach of any children or pets in your household.
What happens if I overdose on Minocin?
Sings of Minocin drug overdose may cause nausea, vomiting, or severe diarrhea. If you or someone in your house has overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222, or seek emergency medical help if you or your loved one is experiencing serious side effects.
Warnings
Minocin may compromise the effectiveness of birth control pills, so talk to your doctor about alternative methods of birth control if you are currently using oral contraceptives. If you are taking any multivitamins, iron or calcium supplements, antacids, or laxatives, wait to take them until at least two hours before or after your Minocin dose, as these products can make antibiotics less effective. The Minocin drug can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so avoid prolonged sun exposure and tanning beds during your course of treatment.
