What is Prozac?
Prozac is classified as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and is used primarily in the treatment of depression, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and certain eating disorders (such as bulimia). Other Prozac uses include treating problems associated with premenstrual dysphoric disorder, ADD (attention deficit disorder), Tourette’s syndrome, alcoholism, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), sleep disorders, and other conditions. Prozac helps maintain mental balance by increasing the quantity of serotonin in the brain.
How do I take Prozac?
Prozac pills (capsules) are taken orally, either once or twice a day, depending on the prescription. Once-daily doses are usually taken in the morning with water; twice daily are taken in the morning and at noon. For best results, it should be taken at the same time every day. However, the dosage strength and frequency may be adjusted depending on the condition being treated; if you have any questions, contact your healthcare professional for Prozac prescription assistance. Before taking Prozac, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to fluoxetine
- You are taking any medications including cisapride, MAOIs, thioridazine, pimozide, or any medications containing fluoxetine
- You are taking aspirin or other NSAIDs, digoxin, lithium, blood thinners, tramadol, fentanyl, and all other medications in order to prevent the negative consequences of Prozac drug interactions
- You are taking vitamins or supplements
- You have bipolar disorder
- You have, or have had, seizures
- You are diabetic
- You have liver disease
- You have glaucoma
- You have had a heart attack
- You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are nursing
- You have attempted suicide, or have suicidal thoughts
What are the possible side effects of taking Prozac?
There are certain side effects that have been reported by those taking the Prozac medication including drowsiness, weakness, or sleepiness, body tremors, changes in sexual habits, nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss, and a sore throat. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist or become severe, contact your physician.
More severe side effects include signs of an allergic reaction (hives, rash, swelling of the face, mouth, throat, tongue, lips, and the extremities), joint pain or muscle stiffness, difficulty swallowing or breathing, hallucinations (either visual or aural), arrhythmia, seizures, or fever. If you experience any of these contact your doctor immediately.
If are prescribed other medications while taking the Prozac drug, contact your physician to prevent negative reactions resulting from Prozac drug interactions.
What if I forget to take a dose of Prozac?
If you forget to take your regularly scheduled dose of your Prozac medication, take it as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is near to the time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skipped the missed one and resume the normal routine. Do not take additional quantities of Prozac pills to make up for missed ones.
How do I store Prozac?
Keep the Prozac drug in its original container, tightly sealed and away from small children. Keep it away from extremes of temperature and humidity, and keep any Prozac information that came with the prescription in a convenient place for easy reference. Dispose of any unused or expired quantities of Prozac pills according to the recommendations of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Prozac?
If you, or the patient, overdose on Prozac contact Poison Control immediately at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing, collapsed or is displaying symptoms of an overdose, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include dizziness, fainting, unconsciousness, confusion, nervousness, hallucinations (visual and aural), arrhythmia, fever, or fainting.

Prozac medication may induce thoughts of suicide, especially in children, teenagers, and young adults, or it may cause existing depression to worsen. Because this medication can make you drowsy, dizzy, or disoriented, do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or use power tools until you are familiar with its effects. Alcohol may exacerbate the side effects of this medication. Prozac use may have negative interactions with other medications. Prozac may also cause Serotonin syndrome, or it may cause abnormal bleeding. Abrupt discontinuation of Prozac may have severe side effects.
