What is Stalevo?

Stalevo is a combination drug that contains carbidopa, levodopa and entacapone. Carbidopa and levodopa both increase the availability of dopamine in the brain and central nervous system. Entacapone prevents the breakdown of dopamine as well as norepinephrine and epinephrine. Because Parkinson’s disease is associated with a lack of dopamine, these medications work together to ease symptoms. Stalevo is not a cure for Parkinson’s disease.

How do I take Stalevo?

Stalevo pills should be swallowed whole, and should not be crushed, chewed or broken. This medication can be taken with or without food, but protein may change the way your body responds to this medication. Follow your doctor’s dietary instructions. Stalevo medicine should be taken at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day. The maximum dose is 6-8 pills in one day. Your doctor will tell you how much you can take.

Before taking Stalevo, tell your doctor if:

• You have ever had an addiction to gambling.
• You have heart disease or high blood pressure
• You’ve ever had a heart attack.
• You have kidney or liver disease.
• You have a gastrointestinal ulcer.
• You have glaucoma.
• You’ve ever had skin cancer.
• You have an endocrine disorder.
• You have asthma or COPD.
• You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications, vitamins or supplements, including antidepressants, anti-anxiety drugs, narcotic drugs, cold medications, anti-seizure drugs, sedatives, other medications for Parkinson’s disease and iron supplements.
• You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Stalevo pills.
• Side Effects

What are the possible side effects of taking Stalevo?

Stalevo can cause side effects. Some of these include diarrhea, headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, upset stomach, dry mouth, loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping, and darker colored urine, saliva and sweat. If any of these side effects are severe or don’t go away, talk to your doctor. Some Stalevo drug side effects can be serious. Tell a doctor immediately if you experience involuntary movement, twitching, difficulty swallowing, abdominal pain, vision changes, black stools, muscle pain, negative mood changes, signs of infection, strong urges to gamble, increased sexual urges, hallucinations, suicidal thoughts and chest pain.

• Missed Dose

What if I forget to take a dose of Stalevo?

If you forget to take a dose of Stalevo, take the missed dose whenever you remember. However, if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular regimen. Do not take double doses to try to compensate for missed ones.

• Storage

How do I store Stalevo?

Stalevo should be stored at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets.

• Overdose

What happens if I overdose on Stalevo?

Signs of overdose on Stalevo may include fainting, loss of coordination, seizures, feeling weak and trouble breathing. If you think you or someone you know may have overdosed on Stalevo, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is experiencing serious adverse effects like the ones listed above, call 911.

Warnings

Stalevo can cause dizziness, get up slowly from a reclining position. It can also cause drowsiness and has caused people to suddenly fall asleep. Alcohol and some other drugs can increase this risk. If this happens to you, do not drive or operate machinery while taking Stalevo. Also, you should not abruptly stop using this medication or reduce your dose without talking to your doctor. This can cause serious adverse effects.

Stalevo is a branded drug. The generic medication is called carbidopa/levodopa/entacapone. These drugs can all be purchased separately. There are no other brand names for all drugs combined.
