Vestura Information:
What is Vestura?
Vestura is a hormonal contraceptive that contains drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. The former is a form of progestin hormone and the latter is a form of estrogen. It works by stopping ovulation and thickening cervical mucus to make it harder for the sperm to fertilize an egg. It also changes the endometrium of the uterus to make implantation of a fertilized egg more difficult.
How do I take Vestura?
Decide what time of day is best for you to take your birth control and take it at that same time every day. You should start taking Vestura on the first day of your period or on the first Sunday after your period begins. Follow your doctor’s instructions. Depending on any previous birth controls, you may have to use condoms or another form of backup birth control for seven days. Be sure to refill your prescription before you run out of pills each month.
Before taking Vestura, tell your doctor if:
- You have migraine headaches.
- You smoke cigarettes and are over the age of 35.
- You have ever had a stroke or heart attack.
- You have heart disease or high blood pressure.
- You have a clotting disorder or you have ever had a blood clot or thrombosis.
- You have diabetes or circulation problems.
- You have thyroid problems.
- You have ever had an abnormal mammogram or any cancers of the reproductive system.
- You have irregular menstrual cycles.
- You have liver problems or liver disease.
- You take any prescription or nonprescription medications, vitamins or supplements.
- You are allergic to any ingredients in Vestura pills.
What are the possible side effects of taking Vestura?
Possible Vestura side effects include nausea, vomiting, weight changes, breast tenderness, bloating, headaches and fluid retention. Spotting or changes in menstruation may also occur as your body adjusts to the birth control. If any of these side effects are severe or do not go away, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Serious but rare side effects that should be addressed immediately include signs of clots or heart attack such as slurred speech, confusion, pain or swelling in the groin or calf area, weakness or tingling in the arms or legs, sudden vision changes, lack of coordination, left arm or jaw pain and weakness on one side of the body. Other serious side effects include migraines, breast lumps, severe abdominal pain and negative mood changes.
What if I forget to take a dose of Vestura?
If you miss a pill, take the missed pill as soon as you remember. If you miss more than one pill, you may need to use backup birth control. Talk to your doctor about what to do if you miss more than one pill.
How do I store Vestura?
Store Vestura in a place where you will always remember to take it. Keep it at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit.
What happens if I overdose on Vestura?
Signs of overdose on Vestura include nausea, vomiting and unusual vaginal bleeding. If you suspect someone has overdosed on Vestura, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
