What is Arcapta?
Arcapta is a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) medication that reduces symptoms like wheezing, cough, chest tightness and shortness of breath. The active ingredient in Arcapta, indacaterol, comes an inhalation powder tablet that works by relaxing the muscles around the airways when taken once daily. Arcapta allows patients with COPD to breathe easier for full 24 hours when taken as directed.
How do I take Arcapta?
Arcapta comes in a capsule form; however, you should never swallow the capsules. To take Arcapta effectively, pull of the cap off of the inhaler and hold the base firmly while tilting the mouthpiece open. With dry hands, place the Arcapta capsules into the capsule chamber and close the inhaler until you hear a clicking sound. Before inhaling, breathe out fully and then put the inhaler into the mouth and breathe in rapidly and steadily as deep as possible. While inhaling, you should hear the capsule spin around in the chamber. If you do not hear the whirring noise, tap the base of the inhaler to loosen the capsule and inhale deeply.
Before taking Arcapta, tell your doctor if:
- You have heart problems
- You have high blood pressure
- You have seizures
- You have thyroid problems
- You have diabetes
- You are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
- You are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed
What are the possible side effects of taking Arcapta?
The most common side effects of Arcapta include: Runny nose, cough, sore throat, headache, and nausea. Take Arcapta as directed to minimize these possible side effect risks.
What if I forget to take a dose of Arcapta?
If you forget to take a dose of Arcapta, take it as soon as you remember or wait until your next scheduled dose if it’s almost time. It is important to never take more than one dose of Arcapta in a 24-hour period.
How do I store Arcapta?
Store Arcapta capsules in a room with a temperature between 59° F to 86° F. Avoid exposing the Arcapta capsules to light, moisture or extreme heat as it may change the chemical composition of the medication. Do not remove capsules from the foil packaging unless you are ready to take your Arcapta.
What happens if I overdose on Arcapta?
If you overdose on Arcapta you may experience shortness of breath, fast or irregular heartbeat, increased blood pressure, and chest pain. Contact local emergency services at 911 or Poison Control at 1800 222-1222 if you overdose on Arcapta.
Warnings
Arcapta is a COPD medication, and it cannot treat asthma, and it should not be used to treat sudden symptoms of COPD like wheezing or shortness of breath. It is important that women who are pregnant or plant to become pregnant not take Arcapta as it may harm the unborn baby.
Brand Names
