Ativan Information:

What is Ativan?

Ativan is a benzodiazepine drug containing lorazepam. The main uses for Ativan include the treatment of anxiety and insomnia. Because Ativan medication has a high potential for dependency or addiction, it is only prescribed for short-term use. Lorazepam has many properties that can make it useful, but also dangerous, in a variety of situations. It is a sedative and a hypnotic; it also has muscle relaxing properties and anticonvulsant properties. It can also cause amnesia. Other uses for Ativan include treatment of acute seizures, treatment of alcohol withdrawal symptoms, and use as a sedative for medical procedures. Ativan, like other benzodiazepine drugs, works by enhancing the receptors for GABA neurotransmitters which has a calming effect on the central nervous system. Ativan acts quickly and is highly effective in the management of panic attacks.

How do I take Ativan?

Buy Ativan with a prescription from your doctor in your local pharmacy. Use our Ativan coupon or discount card as Ativan prescription assistance to get a reduced price when you fill your prescription. Ativan comes in pill form or in a liquid form that is administered with a dropper. The number of Ativan pills you take will depend on your condition. Follow dosing instructions provided by your doctor or pharmacist. This medication may be taken with or without meals, but the consumption of food may reduce nausea. This medication is only for short-term use. Do not stop using Ativan suddenly. This could lead to withdrawal symptoms. Your doctor will slowly reduce your dosage over time.

Before taking Ativan, tell your doctor if:

  • You are lactose intolerant.
  • You have kidney or liver disease.
  • You have glaucoma.
  • You have seizures.
  • You smoke cigarettes.
  • You drink alcohol regularly or you binge drink.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You are over the age of 65.
  • You have any kind of lung disease.
  • You are experiencing or have experienced suicidal thoughts.
  • You have Parkinson’s disease.
  • You have myasthenia gravis.
  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Ativan pills.
  • You are taking other prescription or nonprescription drugs, especially antidepressants, antihistamines, medications for Parkinson’s disease, asthma medications, sedatives, sleeping pills, anti-epileptics, cold medications, birth control pills, digoxin, and valproic acid.

What are the possible side effects of taking Ativan?

Common side effects from taking Ativan include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, constipation, amnesia, lack of coordination, blurred vision, changes in appetite, inability to perform sexually, frequent urination and difficulty concentrating. Other less common and serious side effects include confusion, depression, suicidal thoughts, fainting, hallucinating, hyperactivity, irregular heartbeat, difficulty breathing and difficulty urinating. Contact your doctor at once if you experience any serious or unusual side effects.

What if I forget to take a dose of Ativan?

If you are taking Ativan on a regular schedule and you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose of Ativan, skip the missed dose and continue on your regimen. Never take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How do I store Ativan?

Store Ativan in an airtight container at a room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit.  Protect Ativan pills from heat, moisture, and light and always keep them out of reach of children and pets. Also use caution around anyone that is prone to drug abuse.

What happens if I overdose on Ativan?

Signs of overdose on Ativan include confusion, extreme lethargy, slurred speech, low blood pressure, depressed breathing,  muscle weakness, a hypnotic state, and in extreme cases, coma and death. The simultaneous consumption of alcohol increases the chance of overdose on Ativan. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unconscious or not breathing, call 911.

Warnings

Ativan can be a habit-forming drug. Only take the dose prescribed by your doctor and no more. Always purchase Ativan with a prescription in a pharmacy, and not online or through another vendor. Don’t share your pills with anyone else, and avoid alcohol while using this medication. Don’t take this medication for longer than four months at a time.
