Niravam Information:

What is Niravam?

Niravam contains a benzodiazepine drug called alprazolam. This drug works to treat anxiety and panic attacks by enhancing the effects of the GABA neurotransmitter, which has a calming effect.

How do I take Niravam?

Patients with generalized anxiety disorder usually start treatment by taking three doses of Niravam daily. These doses are small – around .5mg. Patients being treated for panic disorder usually need to start off taking more medication, around 4mg per day. After control of panic attacks has been obtained, this dose can be cut back to a long-term maintenance dose. Your doctor or psychiatrist will prescribe your dosage based on your individual requirements and your condition. Always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions. Niravam comes in the form of an orally-disintegrating tablet. Place the tablet on your tongue with dry hands, and allow it to dissolve in your mouth. It is best not take this medication with a high-fat meal, as it may slow absorption of the drug.

Before taking Niravam, tell your doctor if:

  • You have glaucoma
  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Niravam tablets
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have asthma, COPD or another breathing disorder
  • You have kidney or liver disease
  • You have a history of drug or alcohol addiction
  • You regularly drink alcohol
  • You have ever suffered from depression or suicidal thoughts
  • You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications or herbal supplements, including antifungals, antidepressants, St. John’s wort, sedatives, sleeping pills, birth control pills, antihistamines, narcotics, and any other medications
  • You have ever had seizures

What are the possible side effects of taking Niravam?

Common side effects from taking Niravam medicine include increased saliva production, dizziness, drowsiness and changes in libido. If any of these side effects are extreme or don’t fade away over time, tell your doctor. Some side effects can be serious and require immediate medical attention. These include jaundice, loss of coordination, hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, seizures, slurred speech and memory problems.

What if I forget to take a dose of Niravam?

If you happen to miss a dose of Niravam, take the missed dose whenever you remember, unless it is already close to the time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue on your normal regimen. Never take a double dose to try to make up for a missed one.

How do I store Niravam?

Store Niravam at a temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep the disintegrating tablets in their packets to keep them protected from moisture. Once a tablet breaks or starts to disintegrate, it may not be effective. Keep these tablets out of reach of children and pets.

What happens if I overdose on Niravam?

Signs of overdose on Niravam may include extreme drowsiness, lack of coordination, confusion, weakness and fainting. If you think you or someone else has overdosed on Niravam, call 911 to get medical assistance immediately.

Warnings

This medication can make you dizzy and drowsy, do not drive or do anything potentially dangerous that requires your full attention until you know how this drug affects you. Do not drink alcohol while taking Niravam. This can enhance the risk of dangerous side effects.
