What is Augmentin XR?

Augmentin XR is a combination medicine containing amoxicillin (a penicillin antibioticinfection, and clavulanate potassium kills types of bacteria that may be resistant to penicillin antibiotics. Augmentin XR may be prescribed for pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, urinary tract infections, and certain other types of bacterial infections. It is not an effective form of treatment for viral infections.

How do I take Augmentin XR?

Take Augmentin XR exactly as your doctor has prescribed. Do not stop taking this antibiotic before your doctor has instructed you to, as your infection may return and become more resistant to medication. Try to take Augmentin XR at the same time every day and at equal intervals in order to keep the level of medicine in your body consistent. Do not crush or chew the tablet, as this can cause the extended release medicine to be absorbed too quickly. Swallow the tablet with a full glass of water. 

Before taking Augmentin XR, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to penicillin antibiotics, clavulanate potassium, or any other drugs
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements
  • You have liver or kidney disease
  • You have mononucleosis
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Augmentin XR?

Antibiotics such as Augmentin XR can sometimes cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, but taking your medication with food can reduce the risk of these side effects. If you have severe or persistent nausea or vomiting, contact your doctor right away. You should also call your doctor immediately if you have severe stomach pain, jaundice, dark-colored urine, blood or mucus in your stool, easy bruising or bleeding, fatigue, or signs of a new infection. If you have any other side effects that concern you, let your healthcare provider know.

What if I forget to take a dose of Augmentin XR?

It’s important to take Augmentin XR at regular intervals, but if you do forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and resume your normal dosage schedule. Do not double your dose in an effort to catch up.

How do I store Augmentin XR?

Store Augmentin XR in a tightly sealed container, out of reach of any children or pets in your household. Keep this medication at room temperature and away from bright light and moisture. 

What happens if I overdose on Augmentin XR?

Overdosing on Augmentin XR can lead to serious side effects, including changes in urination, persistent diarrhea, and severe vomiting. If you or someone in your household has overdosed, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) or go to the nearest emergency medical facility.

Warnings

Do not take Augmentin XR with a high fat meal, as this can make the medicine less effective. If this medication causes diarrhea, do not start taking an anti-diarrheal drug without your doctor’s permission. Call your doctor right away if you have diarrhea that is bloody or watery.
