Boniva Information:

What is Boniva?

Boniva is a bisphosphonate medicine that works by inhibiting the activity of osteoclasts, the bone cells that reabsorb bone tissue while new cells are generated by osteoblasts. In cases of osteoporosis, bone cell turnover is rapid and not enough new cells are generated. By stopping the activity of osteoclasts, there is a better opportunity to raise mineral bone density over time. In clinical trials, the chances of vertebral fracture were decreased by over 50%.

How do I take Boniva?

It is crucial that you carefully follow your doctor’s instructions for taking Boniva. Not doing so can result in damage to your esophagus and/or mouth sores. Boniva should be taken in the mornings on an empty stomach. Take this medication with a full glass of water before you put anything else in your stomach. Boniva pills should not be crushed, chewed or broken. Always swallow them whole. Do not take this medication with any other liquid besides water. For sixty minutes, you must stand or sit up straight before you can recline, eat any other foods, drink any other liquids, take vitamins or take any other medications. The typical dosage for Boniva is one 150mg tablet once monthly.

Your doctor will most likely recommend a diet that you should follow while taking this medication in order to increase the chances of successful treatment. Foods rich in vitamin D are recommended. Always follow your doctor’s instructions.

Before taking Boniva, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Boniva tablets
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding or you want to be pregnant in the future
  • You are taking any prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins or supplements, especially chemotherapy drugs, aspirin, NSAIDs, antacids and steroids
  • You have or have ever had anemia
  • You have heartburn, ulcers or other gastrointestinal problems
  • You experience unexplained bruising or bleeding or have problems with blood clotting
  • You have or have ever had cancer or kidney disease
  • You have an infection or have recently had a vaccine
  • You require dental treatment in the near future
  • You are not able to stand or sit up straight for one hour at a time.

What are the possible side effects of taking Boniva?

Side effects from taking Boniva include nausea, diarrhea, constipation, dizziness, weakness, flu-like symptoms, stomach pain, the urge to urinate frequently and painful urination. If any of these side effects are severe or persistent, report them to your doctor as soon as possible. Severe side effects that should be reported right away include pain or difficulty swallowing, loose teeth, chest pain, rash, gum pain or swollen gums, unusual heartburn, and dull aches or pains in the hips or thighs. Boniva can cause severe bone or joint pain within days or after several years of taking it. If you start to experience this pain, tell your doctor as soon as possible.

What if I forget to take a dose of Boniva?

If you forget to take a dose of Boniva medicine, take it the following morning when you remember. If you are already a couple of weeks away from taking your next dose, call your doctor and ask him or her what to do. Never take consecutive doses of Boniva to try to compensate for a missed dose.

How do I store Boniva?

Store Boniva in the package or container it came in, and keep it at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect this medication from light and moisture and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

Warnings

You should have your teeth and gums examined by a dentist and have any necessary dental work done before you begin taking Boniva. This medication can cause osteonecrosis of the jaw, and having dental work done increases this risk.
