Elestrin Information:
What is Elestrin?
Menopause is characterized by a significant drop in estrogen levels, which can cause hot flashes (a sudden feeling of warmth in the face, neck, or chest). Elestrin—a topical medication containing estrogen-- treats hot flashes and other menopause symptoms by increasing estrogen levels in the body. This medication, which comes as a colorless gel, is applied to a small area of skin and is absorbed into the bloodstream.
How do I take Elestrin?
Elestrin comes in a metered-dose pump, where one full push of the pump produces a single dose. Talk to your doctor about your Elestrin drug dosage. It is best to start with the lowest effective dose, so you will most likely use one pump a day, unless you are told otherwise. Slowly press the pump head all the way down and squirt a single dose of gel onto the application site (usually your upper arm/shoulder). Use 2 fingers to rub the gel into the application site, and then wash your hands with soap and hot water. Let the gel dry for at least 5 minutes before covering with clothing.
Before taking Elestrin, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Elestrin, or if you have any other known allergies
- You are currently taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications, especially blood thinners, antibiotics, ritonavir, or antifungal medications
- You have a history of liver problems
- You have or have had blood clots or a bleeding disorder
- You have recently experienced unusual bleeding from your vagina
- You have ever had cancer
- You have had a heart attack or stroke in the last year
- You are pregnant or may become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Elestrin?
Some of the most common Elestrin drug side effects are breast tenderness, abdominal cramping, irregular vaginal bleeding, vaginal yeast infection, headache, hair loss, nausea, and vomiting. If any of these symptoms persist or worsen, let your doctor know. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following less common but serious symptoms: breast lumps, sudden severe headaches, severe chest or leg pain, and changes in vision or speech.
What if I forget to take a dose of Elestrin?
If you forget to apply a dose of Elestrin but remember when there are more than 12 hours until your next dose, go ahead and apply the missed dose. If you have less than 12 hours until your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your normal dosing schedule. Never double the dose to catch up.
How do I store Elestrin?
Move the gel pump’s spout into the locked position and cover with the cap after each use. Store the Elestrin drug at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep this medication out of sight and reach of pets and children. If you are no longer using this drug and need to dispose of it, talk to your pharmacist about how to safely do so.
What happens if I overdose on Elestrin?
Never use more Elestrin than you are prescribed. If you do overdose, you may experience drowsiness, stomach pain, breast tenderness, nausea, vomiting, or vaginal bleeding. Call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-122 if you over someone in your household has overdosed on this drug.
Warnings
Do not apply sunscreen to the Elestrin application site for at least 25 minutes after each dose. You should also avoid getting the application site wet for at least 2 hours after each application. Elestrin is an alcohol-based gel, so you should avoid fire, flames, and smoking until it has dried completely. Do not eat or drink any grapefruit products while taking this medication, as the interaction can potentially have dangerous effects.
