Evamist Information:

What is Evamist?

Evamist is the brand name for a transdermal spray mist that contains estradiol, a form of estrogen; it is prescribed to treat some of the symptoms and conditions brought on by menopause, such as hot flashes, mood changes, and night sweats.

How do I apply Evamist?

Evamist is typically applied once daily, at the same time every day, with one to three sprays applied to adjacent surface areas of the inner forearm that do not overlap. If applying this medication after bathing or showering, thoroughly dry the area where it will be applied. Do not rub the medication into the skin; allow at least two minutes drying time before covering with clothing. Do not wash the site for at least one hour after application. Wash hands after applying Evamist.

Before using Evamist, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to estradiol, other estrogen products, or any of the ingredients in Evamist
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are taking clarithromycin, ritonavir, antifungal medications, rifampin, lovastatin, erythromycin, carbamazepine, or phenobarbital
  • You are taking medications to treat thyroid disease
  • You have, or have had, uterine fibroids, symptoms of jaundice during pregnancy, or endometriosis
  • You have, or have had, heart disease, a stroke, heart attack, blood clots, or blood or bleeding disorders
  • You have, or have had, low or high blood calcium levels, or porphyria
  • You have, or have had, kidney or liver disease, gallbladder disease, or thyroid or pancreas disease
  • You have, or have had, breast cancer, uterine cancer, or hormone-related cancer(s)
  • You are having surgery or will be bedridden.

What are the possible side effects of taking Evamist?

Some patients have reported various side effects after using the Evamist drug. Less severe side effects from this medication include back pain, tender or painful breasts, or changes in sex drive; gastrointestinal problems (constipation, gas, diarrhea, nausea, heartburn); depression, coughing, sleep difficulties, darkening of facial skin, problems wearing contact lenses; flu-like symptoms, or headache; unwanted hair growth or hair loss; redness or irritation at application site, agitation or anxiety, mood swings; vaginal swelling, burning, irritation, or itching, or a vaginal discharge; drowsiness, weight changes, or runny nose. If any of these symptoms persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing; rash, hives, or severe itching), bulging eyes, symptoms of jaundice, fever, joint pain, changes in appetite, changes in coordination or movement, tenderness, pain, or swelling of the stomach, or wheezing.

What if I forget to take a dose of Evamist?

If you forget to apply your scheduled dose of Evamist, and there are more than twelve hours until the next scheduled application, apply it as soon as you remember and are able. However, if there are fewer than twelve hours remaining until the next scheduled application, skip the one that was missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the dosage amount to make up for any missed applications.

How do I store Evamist?

Keep Evamist tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not allow this product to freeze and do not use near an open flame or other heat source. Dispose of any unused or expired quantities according to the instructions of a pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Evamist?

If an Evamist drug overdose is suspected, or it has been accidentally ingested, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has lost consciousness or stopped breathing, contact Emergency Services at 911. Overdose symptoms include vaginal bleeding, vomiting, or nausea.

Warnings

Do not use the Evamist drug if you are pregnant; contact your doctor if you become pregnant while using this medication. Do not use Evamist on areas other than the forearm. Allow at least two hours drying time before swimming after applying the spray. This medication may increase the risk of endometrial cancer, myocardial infarction, breast cancer, stroke, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism. Do not let anyone touch the area where Evamist has been applied; secondary exposure to prepubescent females and males may result in breast budding, breast mass development and gynecomastia. Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while taking this medication without a doctor’s approval. Flammable; do not use near an open flame. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight.
