Fluticasone Propionate Information:

What is fluticasone propionate?

Fluticasone propionate is a corticosteroid used to treat allergies and asthma. Fluticasone propionate nasal spray treats allergies by stopping inflammation and blocking histamines that cause allergic reactions. The fluticasone propionate inhaler is used to prevent asthma attacks and works by reducing inflammation in bronchial passages. Fluticasone propionate may also come as a cream or ointment used to treat various skin conditions due it its anti-inflammatory properties. It also relieves dryness, itching and redness.

How do I take fluticasone propionate?

If using the fluticasone propionate nasal spray, the bottle should be shaken before each use. If using the bottle for the first time, point the nozzle away from you and press the pump six times. Then, hold one nostril closed with your finger, insert the nozzle into the other nostril, and spray one dose into your nostril while inhaling. Exhale through your mouth. Repeat if more than one dose was prescribed by your doctor. If you haven’t used the spray in a week or longer, the solution may have settled to the bottom. Shake the bottle and point the nozzle away from you. Press the pump until a full spray comes out of the bottle. Then use as normal. Wipe the applicator and replace the cap after each use.

To use fluticasone propionate cream or ointment, clean and dry the affected area. Then apply a thin layer of the cream or ointment and rub it in until it disappears. Wash hands after applying the medication. Apply the medication at regular intervals as prescribed by your doctor.

To use the fluticasone propionate inhaler prime the inhaler according to the directions. For best results, the canister should be at room temperature before use. Make sure that the canister is properly placed in the inhaler unit. Shake well before using. Breathe out slowly and completely. Then place the mouthpiece between your lips and try to rest your tongue flat. As you start to take a slow deep breath, press the canister and mouthpiece together at exactly the same time. Continue breathing in slowly and deeply and hold for as long as comfortable, then breathe out slowly through pursed lips or your nose. If more than one spray is prescribed, wait a few minutes and repeat. After inhaling, rinse your mouth with water without swallowing.

Before taking fluticasone propionate, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to fluticasone, corticosteroids or any other drugs.
  • You are taking prescription and nonprescription drugs, especially skin products containing hydrocortisone and vitamins.
  • You have infections of the respiratory tract, untreated fungal or bacterial infections, parasitic or viral infections, measles, chickenpox, herpes simplex in or around the eye, or recently received a vaccination.
  • You have glaucoma or cataracts.
  • You have any other illnesses, active infections, or allergies.
  • You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
  • You have large areas of burned or damaged skin. (Applies if using fluticasone propionate ointment or cream.)
  • You have poor circulation.
  • You have thinning or wasting skin.

What if I forget to take a dose of fluticasone propionate?
