What is Foradil?
Foradil is a powder medication intended for patients 5 years of age or older with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COP. The active ingredient in Foradil, formoterol, works by opening up constricted muscles around the airways so that air can flow into the lungs more efficiently, thus reducing coughing, wheezing, and trouble breathing.
How do I take Foradil?
Foradil comes in a capsule form; however, it should not be ingested like other oral medications. With every packet containing Foradil comes an Aerolizer that helps deliver the powder medication into the throat. Patients should place the medicated capsules into the capsule-chamber at the base of the inhaler, avoiding mouthpiece. After the capsule is placed in the designated chamber, close the mouthpiece back into position. Exhale fully before treating, and put the inhaler in the mouth at while tilting the head and inhale quickly and deeply to allow the medicated power capsule to disengage.
Before taking Foradil, tell your doctor if you:
- have high blood pressure
- have seizures
- have thyroid problems
- have diabetes
- have a swelling of an artery
- have a pheochromocytoma
- are allergic to any ingredients in Foradil
What are the possible side effects of Foradil?
Some of the most common side effects patients on Foradil experience include headache, tremor, chest infection, chest pain, trouble sleeping, viral infections, runny nose, tonsillitis, gastroenteritis, abdominal pain, nausea, respiratory infection, throat infection, chest pain, sinus infection fever, leg cramps, and muscle cramps.
What if I forget to take a dose of Foradil?
If you forget to take a dose of Foradil, skip the missed dose and continue on the regular dosing schedule.
How do I store Foradil?
Store Foradil in a room with a temperature between 68°F and 77°F, and protect it from excessive heat and moisture. Do not remove the capsules from the foil until they are ready to be used with the Aerolizer inhaler. Use the medication by the “Use By’ date indicated on the packet. Use a new inhaler with every packet of medication provided.
What happens if I overdose on Foradil?
A Foradil drug overdose can cause cardiac arrest and even death if not treated immediately. If you or someone overdoses on Foradil, contact poison control 1-800-222-1222.If a patient has stopped breathing or is unconscious, contact local emergency services at 911.
Warnings
Long-acting beta-adrenergic agonist like Foradil increases the risk for asthma-related deaths in children. Patients with a history of hypertension or prehypertension should note that Foradil can increase pulse rate, blood pressure, and other related symptoms, which can worsen over time.

Foradil is brand name drug. There is currently no generic version for Foradil at the moment, but could become available once the patent for formoterol expires.
