Glyburide Information:

What is glyburide?

Glyburide may be prescribed alone or alongside other diabetes medications to help control blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. It works by causing the body to release insulin, which lowers blood sugar. It is most effective when used alongside regular exercise and a healthy diet.

How do I take glyburide?

The glyburide drug comes as a tablet that is usually taken once a day with breakfast (unless your doctor gives you different instructions). If you are also taking the diabetes medication colesevelam, take glyburide at least four hours before your colesevelam dose.

Before taking glyburide, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to any of the active or inactive ingredients in the glyburide medicine, or you have any other allergies
  • You have type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements, especially bosentan, gemifibrozil, cyclosporine, ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, or calcium channel blockers
  • You have liver, kidney, or thyroid disease
  • You have any heart problems
  • You have any stomach or bowel problems, such as a blockage
  • You have a nervous system problem (e.g. autonomic neuropathy)
  • You have hormonal problems (e.g. syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone)
  • You have an electrolyte imbalance
  • You have a severe infection, diarrhea, or fever
  • You have recently been injured or will be having surgery
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking glyburide?

Mild side effects of the glyburide drug may include nausea, heartburn, and a feeling that your stomach is full. If any of these side effects persist or interfere with your daily activities, inform your doctor. Contact your doctor right away if you experience unusual weight gain, mood changes, easy bruising or bleeding, jaundice, dark urine, unusual fatigue, stomach pain, or any signs of a new infection. Get emergency medical attention of you have seizures or a severe allergic reaction.

What if I forget to take a dose of glyburide?

It’s important to take glyburide at the same time every day, but if you do miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose when you remember, skip the missed one. Never double your dose in an effort to catch up.

How do I store glyburide?

Keep glyburide in a tightly sealed container at room temperature. Don’t store it in the bathroom, since bright light and humidity can negatively affect it. Keep it out of reach of children and pets, and if you no longer need this medication or it expires, ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of leftover glyburide pills.

What happens if I overdose on glyburide?

Overdosing on glyburide may cause tremors, excessive sweating, a fast heartbeat, or loss of consciousness. Seek emergency medical attention if you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed.

Warnings

Glyburide may cause high or low blood sugar levels, so make sure you recognize the signs and know what to do in these situations. Carry a quick source of sugar (such as hard candy or fruit) with you in case your blood sugar drops too low. Limit your alcohol consumption, since alcohol can cause your blood sugar to drop and may exacerbate certain side effects of glyburide. This medication may also make your more sensitive to sunlight, so limit your sun exposure, and wear protective clothing or sunscreen when you do need to be outside.

Brand Names
