What is indomethacin?

Indomethacin is a prescription NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) that is used to treat moderate to severe pain caused by inflammation arising from a variety of conditions, the most common of these being osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout. It works similarly to other NSAIDs by inhibiting the COX enzymes that help produce prostaglandins. Do not take this medication more often or in higher doses than needed to control symptoms of pain. Suppositories are absorbed more rapidly and have a quicker onset than oral indomethacin. To insert indomethacin suppositories, dip the end of a suppository in water. Then lie on your left side and move your right knee up to your chest. Using your right hand, insert the suppository about one inch into the rectum. If you are left-handed, do the opposite. Remain in a reclining position for at least 15 minutes before getting up. Wash your hands with soap and water. Try to keep the suppository in place for at least an hour.
