What is leflunomide?

Leflunomide is a rheumatoid arthritis medication for adults 18 years of age or older. The active ingredients in leflunomide work by suppressing the body’s immune system to reduce abnormal inflammation that can cause pain and swelling.  Patients should note that leflunomide does not work right way, and that it can take 6 to 8 weeks for rheumatoid arthritis symptoms to subside, with maximum effectiveness after 6 months. 

How do I take leflunomide?

Patients should leflunomide once day, with or without food. It is important that patients not take more or less than the prescribed dosage of leflunomide.

Before taking leflunomide, tell your doctor if:

  • You have a history of liver disease or hepatitis
  • You have kidney disease
  • You have any kind of infection
  • You have a history of tuberculosis
  • You have a cell blood disorders like anemia, easy bruising or bleeding.
  • You have weak immune system
  • If you use any immune system depressant drugs like chemotherapy or steroids
  • You are pregnant or plan to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of leflunomide?
Some of the most common side effects patients on leflunomide experience include diarrhea, headache, nausea, vomiting, rash, hair loss, high blood pressure, back pain, abdominal pain, bronchitis, dizziness, and mouth ulcers. 

What if I forget to take a dose of leflunomide?

If you forget to take a dose of leflunomide and remember the next day, only take that day’s scheduled dose. It is important that patients not take more or less than the prescribed dosage of leflunomide.  

How do I store leflunomide?

Keep Leflunomide in a room with a temperature ranging from 59 to 86°F, and away from light, extreme heat, or moisture. 

What happens if I overdose on Leflunomide?

Patients who overdose on Leflunomide experience symptoms like diarrhea, stomach pain, extreme fatigue, weakness, pale skin, fast heartbeat, and shortness of breath. Contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222, or 911 if the patient stops breathing or collapses.

Warnings

Women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant should not take Leflunomide as may harm the unborn baby. Patients with liver problems should avoid taking Leflunomide as it cause liver damage that can lead to death. Patients should avoid drinking alcohol and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications like Advil while taking Leflunomide.
