Olopatadine Information:
What is olopatadine?
The olopatadine drug is an antihistamine. Drugs in this class block the action of histamines, a natural compound and neurotransmitter that causes allergy symptoms. Generic olopatadine is only available as a nasal spray, although there is a brand name eye drop containing olopatadine that is used to treat red and itchy eyes.
How do I take olopatadine?
If you are using the olopatadine nasal spray for the first time, follow the instructions on the packaging to prime the pump. Spray several test sprays away from your face until the medication is coming out in a fine mist. Blow your nose, and then place the tip of the spray bottle into one nostril while using one finger to hold the other nostril closed. Press down on the pump and inhale the medication. Only use as many sprays as your doctor has prescribed, and clean the pump nozzle when you are done.
Before taking olopatadine, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to the ingredients in this medication or have any other allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
- You have any nasal problems unrelated to your allergies (e.g. a deviated septum)
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking olopatadine?
Serious side effects of the olopatadine drug are very unlikely. However, some people have reported experiencing nose bleeds, a bitter taste in the mouth, or nasal irritation after using this medication. In rare cases, olopatadine may cause drowsiness. These mild side effects usually aren’t a cause for concern, but consult your doctor if you have any side effects that last a long time or get worse. Call your doctor right away in the rare event that you develop a fever, sores in your nose, or a hole in your nasal septum.
What if I forget to take a dose of olopatadine?
If your doctor has instructed you to use olopatadine on a regular schedule, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one. Do not use more spray than you have been prescribed for a single dose.
How do I store olopatadine?
You can refrigerate your olopatadine nasal spray or store it at room temperature. Wherever you store it, make sure it is out of reach of any children or pets in your home. If you no longer need your nasal spray or it has expired, ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of it.
What happens if I overdose on olopatadine?
Overdosing on olopatadine may result in excessive drowsiness. Children are more likely to experience overdose symptoms, including drowsiness and agitation. If you or someone in your household has overdosed on this medication, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Spray olopatadine in your nostrils only; keep this medication away from your eyes and mouth. Be careful driving until you know how olopatadine affects you, since this drug can cause drowsiness in some people. Limit your alcohol consumption while using antihistamines like olopatadine, as alcohol can increase certain side effects.
Brand Names
There are two brand name versions of olopatadine: Patanase (a nasal spray) and Patanol (an eye drop). Generic olopatadine is only available as a nasal spray.
