What is raloxifene?

Raloxifene is an endocrine metabolic agent of the selective estrogen regulator/modulator class, prescribed to prevent bone loss in post-menopausal women and to reduce the risk of breast cancer in post-menopausal women with osteoporosis. It works by affecting the bone formation cycle, preventing its breakdown to reduce the loss of bone tissue.

How do I take raloxifene?

Raloxifene is dispensed as a tablet that is taken orally, with or without food. The dosage frequency will be determined by the patient profile. Your doctor may also suggest dietary adjustments to ensure an adequate intake of Vitamin D and calcium. Continue to take this medication even if you feel well and do not discontinue its use without consulting your doctor.

Before taking raloxifene, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to raloxifene or any of the ingredients in this medication
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are taking colestipol, lidocaine, anticoagulants, diazepam, cholestyramine, or diazoxide
  • You have taken medications that contain estrogen and whether or not your triglyceride levels increased
  • You have, or have had, breast cancer, breast lumps, or any type of cancer
  • You have, or have had, heart, kidney, or liver disease, or heart failure

What are the possible side effects of taking raloxifene?

Some individuals have reported side effects after taking raloxifene. Mild symptoms include sleep difficulties, flu-like symptoms, hot flashes, joint pain, leg cramps, sweating, or swelling of the feet, legs, ankles, or hands. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; or difficulty breathing or swallowing), leg pain, sudden chest pain, warm feeling in the lower leg, shortness of breath, coughing blood, blurred vision, or loss of vision.

What if I forget to take a dose of raloxifene?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of raloxifene, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase dosage or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed.

How do I store raloxifene?

Keep the raloxifene drug tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on raloxifene?

If an overdose of raloxifene is suspected, contact the Poison Control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include diarrhea, dizziness, flushing, leg cramps, loss of coordination, rash, tremors, or vomiting.

Warnings

Contact your doctor immediately if you become pregnant while taking raloxifene. Women who have not undergone menopause should not take this medication.
