Riomet Information:

What is Riomet?

Riomet can be used alone or alongside other medications to help people with type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar levels. It works by decreasing the amount of sugar produced by the liver and restoring the normal function of insulin, which regulates the amount of glucose in the bloodstream. It may also be used to help prevent diabetes in people who are at high risk for developing this condition. It is most effective when used alongside regular exercise and a healthy diet.

How do I take Riomet?

Your Riomet oral solution should come with a special measuring spoon. Use this to measure out each dose, and take your medication with food. Your dosage will depend on your condition, so follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Most people who need this medication take it twice a day, at the same times every day.

Before taking Riomet, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medications
  • You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter drugs or supplements
  • You have kidney or liver disease
  • You have a history of breathing problems (e.g. chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder)
  • You have a history of heart problems
  • You have anemia or any other blood problems
  • You will need to get an X-ray or CT scan that requires dye to be injected into your veins
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Riomet?

Riomet sometimes causes stomach-related side effects, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or a metallic taste in the mouth. These side effects usually subside, but if they last a long time or subside but then return, tell your doctor, as these may be signs of a serious condition called lactic acidosis. Other rare side effects that require medical attention include muscle pain or weakness, severe dizziness, difficulty breathing, or an irregular heartbeat. If you ever have any symptoms that concern you, let your doctor know.

What happens if I forget a dose of Riomet?

Take the missed dose along with food as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and get back to your regular dosage schedule. You should never take two doses at once.

How do I store Riomet?

Store the Riomet drug at room temperature, in a dry space that is out of reach of any pets or children in your home. If you have expired or unused medication, talk to your pharmacist to find out how to safely dispose of it.

What happens if I overdose on Riomet?

Overdosing on Riomet can cause lactic acidosis, a serious and potentially fatal condition. Symptoms may include rapid breathing, an irregular heart rhythm, severe nausea or vomiting, and extreme drowsiness. If you or someone in your household has overdosed, seek emergency medical attention right away.

Warnings

Although unlikely, Riomet may cause low blood sugar when prescribed alongside other diabetes medication. Go over the symptoms of low blood sugar with your doctor so you know what to look out for and what to do if you blood sugar does drop too low. Limit alcohol consumption while taking this medication, and be careful not to become dehydrated, or you may be at a greater risk for serious side effects. If you become dehydrated due to persistent vomiting or diarrhea, stop taking the Riomet drug and call your doctor.
