Rivaroxaban Information:

What is rivaroxaban?

Rivaroxaban, an anticoagulant drug, is prescribed to treat and prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the legs, and pulmonary embolism (PE) in the lungs. It is also prescribed to patients following hip or knee replacement surgeries to prevent blood clots and to those with atrial fibrillation. It is classified as factor X inhibitor that works by decreasing the clotting ability of the blood.

How do I take rivaroxaban?

Rivaroxaban is an oral medication in tablet form that is taken either once or twice a day, usually with a meal and with water. The dosage strength, schedule, and frequency will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s medical profile. Continue to take this medication even if you are feeling well; do not stop taking this drug without your doctor’s permission as there is an increased risk of stroke or blood clot formation. If you have any questions about this medication, ask your healthcare provider for rivaroxaban patient assistance.

Before taking rivaroxaban, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to rivaroxaban or any of the ingredients in the rivaroxaban drug
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are taking anagrelide, amiodarone, aspirin, azithromycin, NSAIDs, carbamazepine, indomethacin, clarithromycin, other anticoagulants, ketoprofen, conivaptan, verapamil, naproxen, diltiazem, dronedarone, cilostazol, erythromycin, clopidogrel, felodipine, dipyridamole, fluconazole, ritonavir, indinavir, eptifibatide, itraconazole, heparin, ketoconazole, prasugrel, lopinavir, ticagrelor, phenobarbital, phenytoin, ticlopidine, quinidine, tirofabin, ranolazine, warfarin, or rifampin
  • You have, or have had, an epidural, epidural catheter, spinal puncture, spinal anesthesia, or spinal deformity
  • You have, or have had, any heavy bleeding that could not be controlled, unusual bleeding, or a blood disorder
  • You have, or have had, liver disease, kidney disease, or a heart valve replaced

What are the possible side effects of taking rivaroxaban?

Some individuals have reported side effects after taking rivaroxaban. Less severe symptoms include muscle spasms. If these persist or worsen, contact your healthcare professional.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction, bleeding gums, black, bloody, or tarry stools, blurred vision, coughing up or vomiting blood or material resembling coffee grounds, dizziness, frequent nosebleeds, headache, fainting, heavy menstrual bleeding, pain in an arm or leg, painful or swollen wound sites, pink or brown urine, fatigue, muscle weakness, back pain, numb or tingling limbs, loss of bladder or bowel control, or an inability to move your legs.

What if I forget to take a dose of rivaroxaban?

If you are on a once-daily dosage of rivaroxaban and forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember and are able; do not take multiple tablets to make up for a missed one. If you are taking this medication twice a day and miss a dose, take the missed one as soon as you remember and are able. In this instance, you may take two tablets at the same time to make up for the one missed; return to the regular dosing schedule on the next day.

How do I store rivaroxaban?

Keep the rivaroxaban drug tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused or expired doses according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on rivaroxaban?

Signs of an overdose include blood in the urine, black, bloody, or tarry stools, coughing up blood or what appears to be coffee grounds, and unusual bleeding or bruising.
