Rizatriptan Information:
What is rizatriptan?
Rizatriptan is a selective serotonin receptor agonist (SSRA) that is prescribed to treat the symptoms of migraine headaches after they begin to appear. It is not prescribed to prevent migraines or to treat cluster headaches or headaches caused by other conditions. It works by restricting pain signals to the brain, blocking substances that cause pain and nausea, and narrowing blood vessels in the brain.
How do I take rizatriptan?
Rizatriptan is administered as a tablet or a disintegrating tab that is taken orally at the first signs of a migraine headache. Take the tablet using water; no water is needed for the disintegrating tab. Do not crush, bite, or chew the tablet. Use dry hands to remove the disintegrating tab and place it immediately on the tongue; it will dissolve almost instantly. If your symptoms do not improve, contact your physician for instructions. If your symptoms improve, but return after two hours, another dose may be taken; your doctor will tell you how many doses you can take in a 24-hour period. Use should not exceed ten days in a thirty day period.
Before taking rizatriptan, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to rizatriptan or any of the ingredients in this medication
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are taking, or have taken in the last 24 hours, SSRAs, SSRIs, SNRIs, or ergot-type medications
- You are taking MAOIs, or have taken them in the last two weeks
- You are taking NSAIDs, over-the-counter analgesics (including acetaminophen), antidepressants, or propranolol
- You have, have had, or there is a family history of heart disease, heart attack, angina, arrhythmia, stroke, mini-stroke, blood circulation problems, Raynaud’s disease, or hypertension
- You have, or have had, diabetes, ischemic bowel disease, high cholesterol, PKU, or kidney or liver disease
- You are overweight or you smoke
- You have gone through menopause
What are the possible side effects of taking rizatriptan?
Some people have reported side effects from the rizatriptan drug. Less severe symptoms include diarrhea, dry mouth, flushing, muscle cramps or pain, fatigue, tremors, or upset stomach. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; fever; hoarseness; difficulty breathing or swallowing); bloody diarrhea; cold sweats; vision changes; lightheadedness; pain, burning, or tingling hands or feet; pale or blue fingers and toes; shortness of breath; slow or difficult speech; sudden or severe stomach pain; weak or numb arm or leg.
What if I forget to take a dose of rizatriptan?
Rizatriptan is taken on an as needed basis when the symptoms of a migraine headache begin to appear.
How do I store rizatriptan?
Keep rizatriptan tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not remove a tablet from its packaging until you are ready to take it. Dispose of any unused medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on rizatriptan?
If an overdose of the rizatriptan drug is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Symptoms of an overdose include feeling faint or dizzy, drowsiness, headache, arrhythmia, tachycardia, shortness of breath, vomiting, or tightness, pain, pressure, or heaviness in the chest, throat, neck, or jaw.
Warnings
Rizatriptan may make you drowsy; do not drive, operate heavy machinery or equipment, use power tools, or handle firearms until its effects are known. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Rizatriptan is not prescribed for pain relief for headaches induced by stress. Taking more of this medication, or taking it longer than prescribed, may cause headaches to worsen. Call your doctor if headache frequency increases, headaches worsen, or you experience more than four headaches in a month.
