What is Spinosad?
Spinosad is a prescription topical treatment that helps treat head lice. Spinosad is derived a naturally derived from soil bacteria, and it works by intoxicating, paralyzing and killing lice when used as directed. Unlike other lice treatments, Spinosad does not require nit-combing hair and is proven to be more effective than other over the counter lice treatments.
How do I take Spinosad?
Spinosad is applied directly to dry hair and scalp, and by working the solution to the ends of the hair. Once the solution is applied, leave it on for 10 minutes and rinse hair and scalp with warm water. Unlike other lice treatments, Spinosad does not require nit combing. Remember to wash your hands thoroughly after each use. To prevent the spread of lice, remember to wash all personal items such as bedding, pillows, and clothes in hot water.
Before taking Spinosad, tell your doctor if:
- You have skin conditions or sensitivities
- You are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
- You are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed
What are the possible side effects of taking Spinosad?

What if I forget to take a dose of Spinosad?
Spinosad is applied one directly on the scalp and hair. Patients can repeat the treatment if lice are seen after 7 days of treatment. Do not apply more Spinosad than prescribed.
How do I store Spinosad?
Store Spinosad solution in a room with a temperature between 68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not expose the solution to extreme heat, cold, or moisture, and keep out of reach from children.
What happens if I overdose on Spinosad?
If you apply too much Spinosad on the scalp, simply rinse it off with warm water. Ingesting Spinosad solution can cause life-threatening reactions. Call 911 or Poison Control at 1(800) 222-1222 if you ingest Spinosad.
Warnings
Spinosad should not be used by infants under 6 months as it can increase the risk for systemic absorption.
