Sumatriptan Information:

What is sumatriptan?

Sumatriptan is a synthetic drug used to ease the extreme symptoms of migraine headaches. While it does not reduce the frequency or prevent their occurrence, it does provide relief from the pain by narrowing the blood vessels in the head. Sumatriptan side effects can be significant in some patients and should not be used as a general pain reliever as it will not relieve pain caused by conditions other than migraine.  Sumatriptan is a Selective Receptor Agonist, which is a class of medicines that stop pain signals from being sent to the brain, in turn blocking the release of substances which naturally occur in the brain that cause pain, nausea and other migraine symptoms. Sumatriptan is available in both tablet and liquid form and is available in 25mg, 50mg, or 100mg doses.

How do I take sumatriptan?

Reduce the sumatriptan price by purchasing your medications at your local pharmacy using our free sumatriptan coupon or discount card. Do not use sumatriptan for any headache or pain that is not associated with your usual migraines.  Sumatriptan works best if you take it as soon as your headache begins. If you typically see an aura before your migraine headache sets in, you should wait until your pain actually begins before you take sumatriptan. You should discuss alternative pain relievers with your doctor if you wish to take medication before the pain actually sets in. Talk to your doctor about how you should take this medication. Do not take more medicine than your doctor prescribes and do not take it more often than prescribed. Taking too much can increase your risk for sumatriptan side effects.

Sumatriptan in tablet form should be swallowed whole with water or another non-alcoholic liquid. Do not crush, break or chew the tablet. You may take the tablet with or without food. Your dose of sumatriptan will be different than for other patients and is determined by your medical practitioner based on your individual factors. You should follow your doctor’s directions as printed on your medication label. If you have any questions, you should discuss them with your doctor or pharmacist.

Adult migraine sufferers should take each tablet of 25mg, 50mg, or 100mg as a single dose. If, after experiencing pain relief, the pain returns or becomes worse, you may take another dose at least 2 hours after the last dose. Do not take more than 200mg in any 24-hour period. If your pain is not relieved after you take sumatriptan, you may have a condition other than migraine which requires treatment.

Before taking sumatriptan, tell your doctor if:

  • You have bowel disease or colitis
  • You have diabetes
  • You have a family history of heart disease
  • You have a fast or irregular heartbeat
  • You have heart disease, blood vessel disease, angina or have had a previous heart attack
  • You have high blood pressure
  • You have high cholesterol
  • You have had a stroke, transient ischemic attacks (mini-strokes) or intracranial bleeding
  • You have kidney or liver disease
  • You are overweight
  • You have poor circulation
  • You have had postmenopausal or surgical removal of your uterus and ovaries
  • You have Raynaud’s disease
  • You have a seizure disorder
  • You have had an usual or allergic reaction to sumatriptan, other medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives
  • You are pregnant or are trying to become pregnant
  • You are breastfeeding

What are the possible side effects of taking sumatriptan?

Sumatriptan side effects are uncommon and should be reported to your doctor. Tell your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms: abdominal or stomach pain, anxiety, blurred vision, changes in patterns or rhythms of your speech, chest pain or tightness, chills, confusion, dizziness, irregular or racing heartbeat or pulse, worsening headache, muscle cramps or stiffness, neck or jaw pain, nightmares, shivering, sweating, swelling in your extremities or trouble breathing.

Large doses of sumatriptan can cause a condition called sulfhemoglobinemia, which changes your blood from red to a greenish-black due to the integration of sulfur into the hemoglobin molecule. Discontinuing the use of sumatriptan will reverse this condition within a few weeks.

These potential sumatriptan side effects are uncommon and may subside as your body adjusts to your medication. Other side effects not listed may occur. If you notice any changes after taking your medication, report those changes to your healthcare provider.

What if I forget to take a dose of sumatriptan?

Because sumatriptan is only taken on an as-needed basis and not part of a medication regimen, you will not miss a dose.

How do I store sumatriptan?

Store sumatriptan in a cool, dry place and keep this medication out of reach of children and pets. Dispose of any expired medication and ask your pharmacist how to do so.

What happens if I overdose on sumatriptan?

If you have overdosed on sumatriptan or you suspect overdose by someone else, contact your local poison control center. If the patient has collapsed or is not breathing, contact your local emergency response service by dialing 911.

Warnings

Sumatriptan is only to be taken for relief of the symptoms associated with migraine headache. It is not to be used for relief from other types of pain or to prevent migraine attacks. Do not drink alcohol while taking sumatriptan. Smoking cigarettes can also increase the risk of heart-related side effects from sumatriptan use.
