Tanzeum Information:

What is Tanzeum?

Tanzeum (albiglutide) is an incretin mimetic, which helps the pancreas release the right amount of insulin when the body cannot otherwise utilize insulin properly (i.e., Type 2 Diabetes). Additionally, it slows the movement of food through the stomach to the rest of the digestive tract. Tanzeum is usually prescribed when other medications have not worked, and is always prescribed in conjunction with a diet and exercise regimen. This medication is not for use with Type 1 Diabetes.

How do I take Tanzeum?

This medication is taken as a subcutaneous injection of 30 mg 1 time per week on the same day each week, regardless of hour or mealtimes. (If for some reason it cannot be taken on the same day, at least 4 days must pass between doses.) Your doctor may adjust your dosage to 50 mg for a more effective reaction, however you should never take more or less than prescribed.

This medication is usually provided as a powder that must be diluted for injection. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about how to properly dilute and inject Tanzeum at home. Never dilute with or otherwise inject with insulin.

If you receive your medication as an injection pen, follow the directions as provided with your medication. Never use a Single Use pen more than once.

Before taking Tanzeum, tell your doctor if:
• You are pregnant or breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant or to breastfeed.
• You are currently taking any other anti-diabetic medication for Type 2 diabetes.
• You are taking any other drugs, medicines, supplements, or vitamins.
• You have or have a history of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 or thyroid disease or disorder, including thyroid tumors and medullary thyroid carcinoma.
• You have or have a history of gastrointestinal disease or disorder, including slowed digestion.
• You have or have a history of kidney, liver, or pancreas disease or disorder.
• You are or have recently been sick with vomiting and diarrhea.
• You cannot self-administer injections for any reason.

What are the possible side effects of taking Tanzeum?

Please note: Hypoglycemia (extremely low blood sugar) is always a risk when taking antidiabetic medications. Know the symptoms and keep healthy sources of sugar or glucagon injections on hand.

Some of Tanzeum's side effects may be severe and require immediate emergency medical attention. These include: allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, hives and itching, swelling in the face, lips, tongue, throat), feeling unusually tired, feeling out of breath even after little or no exertion, confusion, feeling irritable or jittery, fast heart rate, trouble swallowing or a hoarse voice, swelling (a lump) in your throat, severe nausea and vomiting, severe upper abdomen pain that spreads to your back, swelling in your ankles or feet, difficult or painful urination, inability to urinate.

Common side effects include: swelling or irritation at the injection site, mild nausea or diarrhea, cold and flu-like symptoms with coughing, mild back pain.

What if I forget to take a dose of Tanzeum?

You should take your missed dose of Tanzeum within 3 days. However, if the 3 days pass, skip the missed dose. Never take extra medication to make up for a missed dose, and maintain your regular dosing schedule.

How do I store Tanzeum?

If you receive your medication as a powder for dilution, you may keep the powder in the container it came in at room temperature. Solutions must be used within 8 hours of diluting the medication or must be thrown away.

Unopened Tanzeum injection pens should be kept in their carton (protected from light) and refrigerated. Do not freeze. Throw away any injection pens that are frozen, or which are expired. Follow state law for needle disposal.

What happens if I overdose on Tanzeum?

Symptoms of Tanzeum overdose include severe nausea and vomiting. If you suspect an overdose, call your local poison control center or seek immediate emergency medical assistance.

Warnings

When taking this medication, patients and their family and friends should know what to do in cases of either hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia. Keep all doctor and lab appointments, as your doctor will want to track your body's reaction to Tanzeum, including reactions in the thyroid.

Maintain the diet and exercise regimen as developed with your doctor for as long as you're taking this medicine. Consult with your doctor about how to handle fluctuations in your glucose levels in situations of stress. Never adjust your dosing or dose schedule without discussing it with your doctor.
