Viramune Information:
What is Viramune?
Viramune is the drug nevirapine, an antiretroviral NNRTI (non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor) prescribed, along with other medications, to treat those with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It works by decreasing the amount of HIV in the blood. Although it does not cure HIV, it reduces the chances of developing AIDS or other HIV-related illnesses.
How do I take Viramune?
Viramune is dispensed as either tablets or liquid and is taken orally with liquids (water, soda, or milk) and without regard to food. The amount taken will be determined by your doctor. Viramune is usually taken once a day for two weeks, and then twice a day after that. If taking the liquid, shake the bottle well and pour it into a dosing cup or syringe. After swallowing, refill the dosing device with water and drink it to ensure receiving the full dose. This medication will not cure HIV; continue to take it even if you feel well and do not stop taking it without medical permission.
Before taking Viramune, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to nevirapine or any of the ingredients in the Viramune drug
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You have been told to stop taking nevirapine because of a skin or liver reaction
- You have kidney disease
- You have liver disease or hepatitis B or C
- You have a rash or any skin condition
- You have, or have had, a high CD4 count
- You are undergoing dialysis
What are the possible side effects of taking Viramune?
Some patients report diarrhea or headaches after taking Viramune. Contact your doctor if these conditions persist or worsen. Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include darkened urine, pale stools, excessive tiredness, general malaise or weakness, nausea, vomiting, appetite loss, signs of liver damage such as yellowing of the skin or eyes; pain in the upper right part of the stomach; signs of infection; flu-like symptoms; pain in muscles or joints; blisters, mouth sores, or red or swollen eyes.
What if I forget to take a dose of Viramune?
If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Viramune, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the dosage or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed. If you do not take this medication for seven days or longer, contact your doctor before resuming its use.
How do I store Viramune?
Keep Viramune tightly sealed in its original packaging, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. If taking the oral suspension, do not allow it to freeze. Dispose of any unused medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Viramune?
If an overdose of Viramune is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include sleep difficulties, dizziness, excessive tiredness, fever, headache, nausea, painful red bumps on the skin, rash, swelling of the extremities, vomiting, or weight loss.
Warnings
Viramune may cause life-threatening liver damage or skin or allergic reactions. This medication will not stop the spread of HIV or other diseases. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Viramune. Do not breast-feed while taking this medication or if you are infected with HIV. Viramune may cause an increase in body fat or cause it to move to other parts of the body.
