Xarelto Information:

What is Xarelto?

Xarelto is an anticoagulant medication that is used to stop thrombosis, or blood clotting inside of a blood vessel. Blood clotting is a complicated process that begins with the activation of a cascade of chemicals after the body detects injury. This cascade results in the formation of an enzyme called thrombin.  Thrombin causes the production of a protein called fibrin that ultimately binds platelet cells together, forming blood clots. Thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms abnormally in the blood vessels. This poses a serious danger to the individual as the blood clot can break free and travel through the blood stream, possibly blocking the heart, lungs, or brain. Xarelto stops the formation of thrombin, thereby preventing blood clots and stroke.

How do I take Xarelto?

If you are taking Xarelto to treat atrial fibrillation, take this medication in the evenings with food. If you are taking large doses of Xarelto (20mg), it is recommended to take this medication with food to avoid stomach upset. Take your medication at the same time every day and follow instructions given to you by your doctor.

What are the possible side effects of taking Xarelto?

Also call your doctor if you feel faint, feel a tingling or numbness in any part of the body, you have black or bloody stools, or you find blood when you vomit or cough. If you experience any other unusual or persistent side effects, report them to your doctor.

What if I forget to take a dose of Xarelto?

If you take Xarelto twice a day and you miss a dose, you may take both your doses at once. If you take Xarelto once a day, take the missed dose as soon as you remember, and continue on your regular schedule the next day.
