Zenatane Information:

What is Zenatane?

Zenatane is a prescription retinoid medication used to treat severe nodular acne that has not responded to antibiotics and other medicines. Retinoid drugs like Zenatane help unclog pores and decrease the inflammation of existing pimples. Zenatane can cause some serious side effects, including birth defects in women who are pregnant, and is very tightly regulated as a result. It is only prescribed when patients sign a consent form as part of an iPLEDGE program.

How do I take Zenatane?

Your dosage of Zenatane will depend on your weight, so follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Take this medication twice a day with food and plenty of water, unless your doctor has put you on a different dosage schedule. Do not break the capsules open.

Before taking Zenatane, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medications or foods
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements, especially Vitamin A, tetracycline antibiotics, Dilantin, corticosteroid medicines, or progestin-only birth control
  • You have a history or family history of mental problems
  • You have a history or family history of liver or heart disease
  • You a history or family history of osteoporosis
  • You have asthma
  • You have a history of anorexia
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or may become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Zenatane?

Some of the more common side effects of Zenatane include dry skin, dry eyes, and nosebleeds. If you have any bothersome side effects, tell your doctor. Stop taking Zenatane and contact your doctor immediately if you have any serious side effects. These can include vision changes, hearing problems, back or joint pain, severe stomach pain, difficulty swallowing, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, jaundice, dark urine, skin rash, and unusual mental or mood changes. Zenatane can also cause birth defects, miscarriage, and premature birth, so you should never use this medication while pregnant.

What if I forget to take a dose of Zenatane?

Skip the missed dose and proceed with your normal dosage schedule. Never take two doses at once in an effort to catch up.

How do I store Zenatane?

Keep the Zenatane capsules in their blister packet (or any other container they came in) until you use them. Store this medication at room temperature, away from light and moisture, and out of reach of children and pets. Because this is a carefully controlled medication, you should never receive more than a 30-day supply at a time.

What happens if I overdose on Zenatane?

Overdosing on Zenatane can be very dangerous. Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately if you or someone in your household has overdosed.

Warnings

Do not breastfeed or get pregnant while taking Zenatane or for up to one month after you stop using the medication. You should also avoid donating blood during this time to prevent your blood from being donated to a pregnant woman. Because Zenatane can impair your vision in low light, do not drive at night until you know how the medication affects you. Avoid direct sunlight as much as possible, and do not have any cosmetic skin procedures while using this drug. If you are going to engage in any hard physical activity, tell your doctor first, as this medication may put you at greater risk for bone fractures.
