What is zolmitriptan?

Zolmitriptan is a selective serotonin receptor agonist (SSRA) prescribed to treat the symptoms of migraine headaches. It does not prevent or reduce the number of migraine attacks. This drug works by narrowing the brain’s blood vessels to stop pain signals, and by blocking the release of those natural substances that are believed to be the source of nausea, pain, and other symptoms of migraine headaches.

How do I take zolmitriptan?

Zolmitriptan is administered as a tablet, or an orally disintegrating tablet, that is taken by mouth at the first sign of a migraine headache. If symptoms improve at first but return after two hours, a second dose may be taken; however, if symptoms do not improve after the first dose, call your doctor instead of taking a second dose. Take the regular tablet with a full glass of water. Do not take more than the amount prescribed for a 24-hour period. If the prescribed dosage is less than 2.5mg, the tablet may be split; do not split an orally disintegrating tablet, and do not remove one from its packaging until you are ready to take it. To take the orally disintegrating medication, make sure your hands are dry before removing it from the packaging and placing it on your tongue to dissolve.

Before taking zolmitriptan, tell your doctor if:

• You are allergic to zolmitriptan, SSRAs, or any of the ingredients in the medication
• You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
• You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
• You have taken ergot-type medications or other SSRIs in the past 24 hours
• You have taken an MAO-A during the past two weeks
• You have, or have had, ischemic bowel disease, Raynaud’s disease, circulation problems or conditions, heart disease, an irregular heartbeat, angina, stroke, mini-stroke, a heart attack, hypertension, or high cholesterol or triglyceride levels
• There is a family history of heart disease
• You have kidney or liver disease
• You have diabetes
• You have gone through menopause
• Side Effects

What are the possible side effects of taking zolmitriptan?

Less severe side effects of zolmitriptan may include dizziness, feeling faint, drowsiness, dry mouth, feeling warm or cold, heartburn, nausea, and sweating. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.

Get medical attention right away if you have bloody diarrhea; arrhythmia; tachycardia;  burning, tingling, or pain in the hands or feet; heaviness, tightness, pain, or pressure in the neck, jaw, throat, or chest; pale or blue tinge to fingers and toes; shortness of breath; speech difficulties; sudden or severe stomach pain; or a weakened or numb arm or leg.

What if I forget to take a dose of zolmitriptan?

The zolmitriptan drug is administered on an as-needed basis. Contact your physician if your headache does not improve or if it improved briefly and then returned.

• Storage

How do I store zolmitriptan?

Keep zolmitriptan tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. If taking the orally disintegrating tablet, do not remove it from its packaging until you are ready to take it. Dispose of any unused medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

• Overdose

What happens if I overdose on zolmitriptan?

If an overdose of the zolmitriptan drug is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include extreme drowsiness.

Warnings

Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking zolmitriptan. This medication may make you drowsy or dizzy; do not drive or operate heavy machinery until its effects are known. Taking zolmitriptan for longer than the prescribed time may cause headaches to worsen. Contact your doctor if you have more than three migraine headaches in a month.
