Advair Diskus Information:
What is Advair Diskus?
Advair Diskus (not Advair Discus) is a brand-name combination of the drugs fluticasone and salmeterol. This medication is usually prescribed for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) when other medications like albuterol either don’t work, or they have stopped working for a patient over time. Fluticasone is a corticosteroid that is used to treat asthma and other breathing conditions by blocking histamines that cause bronchial inflammation while salmeterol is a long-acting, beta blocker medication that relaxes smooth muscle tissue, resulting in the relaxation and dilation of bronchial passages when inhaled.
Advair Diskus is sold in a unique disk-shaped device that is used to inhale this medication. Advair is marketed by the GlaxoSmithKline pharmaceutical company which offers patient assistance to cover high out-of-pocket cost. After reviewing the GlaxoSmithKline website, a variety of programs can be found to reimburse the cost of Advair or give away medication to those who don’t have insurance coverage and/or meet certain income requirements. Other organizations like HelpRx offer printable coupons for Advair that can be used in your pharmacy without enrolling or applying for patient assistance.
How do I take Advair Diskus?
Advair Diskus comes as a round, flat inhaler that contains measured doses of the medication in the form of a fine white powder. After removing Advair Diskus from its packaging, write the “opened” and “used by” dates in the spaces provided on the inhaler. Use the medicine in the Diskus within a month’s time, or dispose of it. The usual dosage for this medication is one inhalation twice daily at the same times every day. To open the Diskus, hold it level in one hand and put the thumb of your other hand on the thumb grip. Push your thumb into the thumb grip until the mouthpiece appears and clicks into place. Continue to hold the device level or flat and point the mouthpiece towards you. Then push the lever away from you until it clicks. When the lever is pushed back, a dose is ready to be inhaled and the dose indicator on the Diskus goes down. Before inhaling the medication, exhale completely. Never exhale into the mouthpiece. Once all the air has been released from your lungs, put the mouthpiece to your lips and inhale strongly and deeply through your mouth. Remove the Diskus and hold your breath for as long as you comfortably can. Then breathe out slowly. After using the Diskus, rinse your mouth with water and spit it out. Do not swallow the water, as it may contain some of the mediation. Do not try to use a spacer with the Advair Diskus.

Advair should only be used by patients whose conditions aren’t controlled by corticosteroids alone.
