What is Advair HFA?
Advair HFA is a combination medication that contains fluticasone and salmeterol. Fluticasone is a corticosteroid which works by reducing inflammation in the lungs. Salmeterol is a beta agonist (LABA) that works over extended periods of time (about 12 hours) to relax the smooth muscle tissue in the airways. Advair HFA can help prevent asthma attacks, but it is not to be used to stop an asthma attack that has already started. It is also not approved for the treatment of COPD.
How do I take Advair HFA?
Advair HFA should be taken twice daily, or once every 12 hours. Try to use your Advair HFA inhaler at the same time every day so that you are less likely to forget a dose. Always rinse your mouth out with water and spit in the sink after inhaling your medication. The medication in Advair HFA is not supposed to be swallowed.
Before taking Advair HFA, tell your doctor if:
- Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medication or if you have any food allergies.
- You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications, especially other asthma medications, diuretics, antifungals, beta blockers, antivirals, antidepressants, and MAOIs. Also tell your doctor about any vitamins or herbal supplements you are taking.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You or anyone in your family has osteoporosis.
- You have high blood pressure or an irregular heartbeat.
- You have seizures.
- You have an overactive thyroid.
- You have diabetes.
- You have any condition or disease of the immune system.
- You have liver disease or heart disease.
- You have glaucoma or a herpes infection of the eye.
- You smoke tobacco.
- You have never had chickenpox or measles.
What are the possible side effects of taking Advair HFA?
Possible side effects from Advair HFA include dizziness, headaches, hoarseness, throat irritation, nausea and vomiting, and respiratory tract infection. Tell your doctor if any of these side effects are severe or if you develop signs of an infection. Other more serious but less common side effects include allergic reaction, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, seizures, white patches in your mouth, mood changes, blurred vision, muscle cramps and tremors. Tell your doctor as soon as possible if your asthma symptoms appear to be getting worse.
What if I forget to take a dose of Advair HFA?
If you miss a dose of Advair HFA, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of this medication to try to compensate for a missed one.
How do I store Advair HFA?
Store your Advair HFA inhaler at a temperature between 50 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Store the inhaler with the mouthpiece down, and be sure to write the date on it so you know to dispose of it after one month. The contents of this inhaler are pressurized. Keep your inhaler out of the heat and away from flames. Do not puncture the canister.
What happens if I overdose on Advair HFA?
There have been no overdoses reported on Advair HFA. Signs of overdose may include chest pain, high blood pressure, rapid heart rate, headache, tremors, dry mouth, fatigue, irregular heartbeat and insomnia. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on Advair HFA or they have accidentally ingested a large amount of the medication, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. Anyone who has overdosed will likely need cardiac monitoring.
Warnings
This medication can Increase the risk of asthma-related death and can weaken your immune system over time. Tell your doctor if you’ve never had chickenpox or if you’ve never been vaccinated for highly contagious diseases. Try to stay away from people who are sick. Talk to your doctor about drinking grapefruit juice while taking this medication. Advair HFA can increase your chances of getting osteoporosis and developing glaucoma and cataracts. This medication can have cardiac side effects. Be sure to tell your doctor if you have high blood pressure or any heart problems.
Brand Names
There are currently no generic versions of Advair HFA on the market. Other medications that are similar include Symbicort, Dulera, Advair Diskus and Breo Ellipta. Search our site for discounts on any of these medications. If you find one with a better price, talk to your doctor about switching.
