What is Apidra?

Apidra insulin glulisine is an ultra-rapid acting insulin analogue fabricated from rDNA. It's used to treat hyperglycemia by lowering elevated sugar levels associated with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. It is usually prescribed with other anti-Diabetic medications, including intermediate- and long-acting insulins, because it takes effect faster but its effective period is also shorter.

How do I take Apidra?

Always follow your doctor's instructions explicitly. Dosages should always be determined by your blood-glucose levels at the time of intended injection. You should take Apidra 15 minutes before or 20 minutes after a meal, and should not be used on an empty stomach unless extremely necessary. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include: confusion, jittery feeling, weak feeling, dizziness, elevated heart rate, headache, irritability, hunger, sweating. Severe hypoglycemia is possible, so remember to check your blood-glucose levels and treat accordingly.

However, some of Apidra's side effects are severe and should receive immediate medical attention. These are: allergic reaction (feeling like you may pass out, fast heart rate, wheezing or trouble breathing, unusual sweating, rash on much of the body), swelling or redness, itchiness, thickening skin at the injection site, or low potassium (confusion, extreme thirst, limp or weak muscles, discomfort in the legs, uneven heart rate, increased urination).

 

• Missed Dose

What if I forget to take a dose of Apidra?

While Apidra must be used regularly to see the most benefit, it often is not used on a timed schedule. Make sure you can eat 15 minutes after taking your dose, and never take an extra dose of Apidra to make up for a missed dose.

How do I store Apidra?

Unopened medication can be stored at room temperature or in the refrigerator away from bright light and excess heat. Do not freeze Apidra; if it becomes frozen throw it away.

Opened, in-use medication must be stored at room temperature. Cartridges, pens, and vials must be used within 28 days. Infusion medication must be used within 48 hours. You must discard the opened medication after these times.

What happens if I overdose on Apidra?

An overdose of this medication can be life-threatening and cause severe hypoglycemia. Symptoms include blurred vision, confusion, coma, convulsions, extreme weakness, stomach pain, sweating, trouble speaking, and tremors. If you suspect an overdose, seek immediate emergency medical assistance.

A number of associated factors can affect sugar levels, so it should only be used after testing your blood-glucose levels.
