Avandia Information:
What is Avandia?
Avandia is a specialty type 2 diabetes medication that helps the body process insulin, which lowers blood glucose levels. Properly controlling blood sugar reduces the risk of serious diabetes complications, including nerve damage, kidney problems, heart problems, and loss of vision. The Avandia drug is most effective when used alongside a healthy diet and exercise, and it is not usually taken by patients who are also injecting synthetic insulin. It should not be used to treat type 1 diabetes, a condition in which the pancreas does not produce insulin.
How do I take Avandia?
Your dosage of Avandia will depend on your condition, so follow the dosage schedule that your doctor gives you. Take this medication with or without food, and regularly check your blood glucose levels. It may take several months before you begin seeing the full benefits of the Avandia medicine.
Before taking Avandia, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other medications
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements, especially gemfibrozil or rifampin
- You have heart disease
- You have liver disease
- You have bone problems, such as osteoporosis
- You have high cholesterol
- You have fluid in your lungs
- You have eye problems related to diabetes
- You have edema (swelling caused by excess fluid retention)
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Avandia?
Serious side effects of Avandia are unlikely, but some people who use this medication have reported headaches, back pain, coughing, and other cold-like symptoms. Very rarely, people using this drug have experienced unusual vision changes, severe stomach or abdominal pain, persistent nausea or vomiting, jaundice, dark urine, changes in menstrual cycles, easy bruising or bleeding, shortness of breath, or sudden weight gain. If you have any of these serious side effects, stop taking Avandia and contact your doctor right away. Get emergency medical attention if you have excessive sweating or pain in your chest, jaw, or left arm.
What if I forget to take a dose of Avandia?
If you miss a dose of Avandia, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and resume your normal schedule. Do not take more of this medicine than you normally would in a single dose.
How do I store Avandia?
Keep the Avandia medicine in a tightly sealed container when you are not using it. Store it at room temperature, away from bright light, heat, and moisture. Do not keep it in the bathroom or anywhere that children or pets could easily access.
What happens if I overdose on Avandia?
Overdosing on Avandia may cause dangerously low blood sugar, which can lead to problems such as blurred vision, stomach pain, excessive sweating, severe weakness, difficulty speaking, confusion, tremors, and seizures. If you or someone in your household has overdosed on this drug, get emergency medical attention.
Warnings
Limit your alcohol consumption while taking Avandia, since alcohol can lower your blood sugar. Carefully monitor your blood glucose levels if using Avandia during times of physical stress (e.g. after you have had an infection or undergone surgery). Stress can make it more difficult to control your blood sugar levels, and your doctor may need to adjust your dosage.
Brand Names
At this time, Avandia is only available as a brand name drug. While there may not be a cheaper generic alternative, you can still save up to 54% on the drug’s retail price by using an Avandia coupon from HelpRx.
