Avycaz Information:
Avycaz is a combination drug that utilizes avibactam and ceftazidime to help fight very complicated infections in the systems of the body that break down and filter food and other substances. It helps treat Complicated Intra-Abdominal Infections (cIAI) and Complicated Urinary Tract Infections (cUTI), including Pyelonephritis.
Avycaz is a drug that is not self-administered. Your doctor will administer this drug in injectable form at the doctor's office, a clinic, or the hospital. A full course of treatment is necessary to completely clear an infection. Do not stop using this medication even if you begin to feel better.
Before taking Avycaz, tell your doctor if:
· You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding
· You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medicine
· You are taking an herbal preparation or dietary supplement
· You have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
· You have had a severe allergic reaction to a penicillin-based or beta-lactam antibiotic
· You have kidney problems
Use of Avycaz may cause certain common side effects such as anxiety, constipation, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. Be sure to alert a medical professional immediately if you notice abnormal muscle movements, confusion, hallucinations, passing out, seizures, tremor.
Call your doctor for instruction if you happen to miss a dose of Avycaz, as it can only be administered in a medical setting.
Avycaz will be handled and stored by your physician. It is not stored at home.
You are not likely to overdose on this medication since it is administered by your doctor, but if you suspect overdose, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or get to an emergency room immediately.
Warnings
Alert your doctor or dentist that you are taking the drug Avycaz if you are scheduled to receive any medical, dental, or emergency care, or if you are about to have surgery. Serious and deadly allergic reactions have been observed with use of this drug. It works against bacterial but not viral infections. Continue to use this medication even if you begin to feel better, as the bacteria may still be present and can develop an immunity to the medicine if you suddenly stop taking it. Mild diarrhea happens often with use of antibiotics, but serious diarrhea called pseudomembranous colitis may occur rarely. Check with your doctor before trying to treat diarrhea.
Brand Names
Avycaz is the brand name of the generic drug combination avibactam and ceftazidime. It is not marketed under any additional brand names. There are other antibiotic medications available for the treatment of complex infections, but your doctor will provide the right one for you.
