Tobradex Information:

What is Tobradex?

Tobradex is a combination of two medications: dexamethasone and tobramycin. Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid and will help reduce swelling, while tobramycin is an antibiotic used to kill bacteria. Together, they are used to treat bacterial eye infections.

How do I take Tobradex?

Always wash your hands before using this medication. To apply the Tobradex solution, hold the eye dropper directly above your infected eye and carefully pull your lower lid to make a small pouch. Squeeze a drop into your eye without allowing the dropper to touch the eye or any other surface. Close your eye for one to two minutes, and hold one finger firmly to the corner of your eye by your nose to prevent the solution from leaking out. If your doctor has prescribed more than one drop per dosage, repeat. Only use as many eye drops as your doctor has instructed.

Before taking Tobradex, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients of the Tobradex drug, or you have any other allergies
  • You have a history of other eye problems, especially glaucoma
  • You normally wear contact lenses
  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or may become pregnant while using this medication

What are the possible side effects of taking Tobradex?

Some of the most common side effects of the Tobradex drug are temporary eye discomfort, eye redness, and eyelid itching or swelling. If you experience any of these side effects and they persist or worsen, let your doctor know. In rare cases, this medication may cause eye pain, vision changes, or increased discharge and swelling. Contact your doctor right away if you experience any of these side effects.

What if I forget to take a dose of Tobradex?

If you miss a dose, apply the prescribed number of eye drops as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for another dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your normal application schedule.

How do I store Tobradex?

Keep the Tobradex bottle upright, stored at room temperature and away from light. As with all prescription medications, keep the Tobradex drug out of reach of children and pets. If your medication has expired or you no longer need it, talk to your pharmacist or local waste disposal company to determine how to properly dispose of it.

What happens if I overdose on Tobradex?

If you or someone in your household has swallowed any of the Tobradex solution, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 immediately.

Warnings

Do not wear contact lenses for the duration of your treatment with this medicine. Never use Tobradex for longer than it has been prescribed, as prolonged use can increase your risk for other eye problems. You may experience temporary vision changes after using the Tobradex drug, so do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or participate in any other activities that require clear vision until you know how the medication affects you.
