Byetta Information:
What is Byetta?
Byetta is prescribed for the management of type 2 diabetes. It contains an ingredient called exenatide which is a GLP-1 agonist and an incretin mimetic, meaning it mimics the action of incretin hormones. Byetta works in several ways including increasing insulin secretion in the pancreas after eating, suppressing the release of glucagon after eating, slowing the digestion of food, reducing appetite and increasing satiety, and reducing liver fat content.
How do I take Byetta?
Byetta should be injected twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening. This medication should be administered within 60 minutes before eating, so it is often injected before breakfast and before dinner. Patients normally start on 5mcg doses that are slowly increased to 10mcg after about one month of use. Follow your doctors instructions regarding how much and when you should use Byetta. This medication can be injected into the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm. Use a different spot each time you administer Byetta, about one inch from the previous spot.
Before taking Byetta, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to any medications.
- You are taking birth control pills.
- You have or have ever had pancreatitis or gallstones.
- You have high blood pressure.
- You have kidney disease.
- You are experiencing nausea or vomiting or think you may be dehydrated.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You regularly drink alcohol.
- You are taking other prescription or nonprescription medications, especially antibiotics, ACE inhibitors, diuretics, NSAIDs or aspirin, blood thinners, blood pressure medications and other diabetes medications.
What are the possible side effects of taking Byetta?
Possible side effects from taking Byetta include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, upset stomach, nervousness and decreased appetite. These side effects usually lessen over time. Tell your doctor if these side effects are severe or do not go away. Other more serious side effects include pancreatitis, severe abdominal pain, back pain, severe nausea and vomiting, changes in urination and allergic reaction. Tell your doctor at once if you experience any of these side effects.
What if I forget to take a dose of Byetta?
If you forget to take a dose of Byetta, skip the missed dose and then continue on your regular routine. Do not use a double dose of Byetta to make up for a missed one.
How do I store Byetta?
Byetta should be stored at a temperature no higher than 77 degrees Fahrenheit and should not be allowed to freeze. Pens that are not being used should be stored in the refrigerator. Keep this pen out of the light and away from children and pets. Pens should be disposed of after 30 days and expired medication should not be use. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about how to properly dispose of injector pens and needles. Do not leave pens in the trash where a child or pet might accidentally find it.
What happens if I overdose on Byetta?
Signs of Byetta overdose include severe nausea and vomiting as well as severe hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Take actions outlined by your doctor to stop low blood sugar and call your doctor at once. If the victim is unresponsive or unconscious, call 911.
Warnings
Byetta does not cause low blood sugar, but you should still be aware of the symptoms of low and high blood sugar levels and how to take action to stop it. If you do not know what these symptoms are, talk to your doctor as soon as possible and be sure you know what to do in these situations. Drinking alcohol can increase your chances of having low blood sugar levels. Byetta is not a substitute for insulin.
Brand Names
There are currently no generic versions of Byetta available. Another similar drug is Bydureon which is an extended release version of Byetta. It contains the same ingredient and works over time. In some cases Bydureon might be more affordable because it is only needed once every 7 days. Compare prices and talk to your doctor about what is best for you. We provide coupons and discount cards for Byetta as well as a variety of other diabetes medications. Take advantage of our discounts to lower your medication costs.
