What is Carac?
Carac is a formulation of fluorouracil, a chemotherapy agent that can also be used to treat other types of cancers under different formulations. Carac is a topical cream that works by inhibiting DNA and RNA synthesis in skin cells which slows the rapid division of cancerous or precancerous cells and eventually leads to cell death.
How do I take Carac?
Carac should normally be applied once daily at the same times every day to treat solar keratosis, but follow your doctor’s instructions for your particular condition. Treatment for this particular skin condition normally takes around two to four weeks, but after the lesions have peeled off, it may take a total of two months to heal. Never apply this medication with a metal applicator. Always use a glove or your finger and wash your hands after each use. Do not get Carac near your eyes, nostrils or mouth.
Before taking Carac, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Carac.
- You have DPD enzyme deficiency.
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins or supplements.
- You are using any other skin products on the affected area(s).
- You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are breastfeeding.
What are the possible side effects of taking Carac?
Side effects from using Carac include burning, pain, itching, irritation, redness, crusting, and discoloration at the site of application. Tell your doctor is any of these side effects are severe. Other less common but more serious side effects include fever, vomiting, diarrhea with blood, chills, severe stomach pain and a severe red skin rash. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience any of these serious side effects or any unusual side effects not listed here.
What if I forget to take a dose of Carac?
If you forget to apply a dose of Carac, apply the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it’s almost time for your next application, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular routine. Do not apply two consecutive doses of Carac to try to compensate for a missed one.
How do I store Carac?
Store Carac tightly closed in the tube it comes in at a room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets.
What happens if I overdose on Carac?
Overdose on Carac is not likely. If you overuse Carac, you most likely have exaggerated side effects. If you think you are using too much, schedule an appointment with your doctor to make sure you are using the right dosage. If someone accidentally swallows Carac, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Carac will make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Try to stay out of the sun and stay away from tanning beds and sun lamps. Wear protective clothing like hats and sunglasses and use sunscreen when you must be outside.
Brand Names
Carac is a brand-name medication. There is a generic version of this medication on the market called fluorouracil cream. It is considerably cheaper. Other brands include Efudex.
