What is Cardizem LA?
Cardizem LA contains a drug called diltiazem, which is a calcium channel blocker. It works by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions which relaxes smooth muscle tissue in the heart to reduce blood pressure. It helps to manage angina, or chest pain, by dilating coronary arteries which prevents spasms. It also reduces the heart’s demand for oxygen.
How do I take Cardizem LA?
Cardizem LA comes in the form of tablets or capsules to be taken orally. It is normally taken once per day at the same time every day. Do not crush, chew or break Cardizem LA tablets, as this can destroy the extended-release mechanism. Take the pills with a full glass of water. Always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions.
Before taking Cardizem LA, tell your doctor if:
- You have any other heart conditions.
- You have kidney or liver disease.
- You have recently had a heart attack.
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Cardizem LA pills.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You regularly drink alcohol.

If you miss a dose of Cardizem LA, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. It it’s almost time to take your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your normal regimen. Don’t take a double dose to try to compensate for a missed one.
How do I store Cardizem LA?
Store Cardizem LA at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets and protect it from light and moisture.
What happens if I overdose on Cardizem LA?
Signs of overdose on Cardizem LA include slow breathing, slow heart rate and heart failure. If you think you or someone you know has overdose on Cardizem LA, seek emergency medical treatment or call 911.
Warnings
To avoid feeling dizzy while taking Cardizem LA, get up slowly from a reclining position and don’t drive until you know how this medicine affects you. Do not drink large amounts of alcohol while taking this medication. Your doctor may ask you to check your pulse or blood pressure on a regular basis. Follow your doctor’s instructions.
