Clomiphene Information:
What is clomiphene?
Clomiphene is a fertility medication that causes the pituitary gland to release certain hormones that promote ovulation, increasing a woman’s likelihood of becoming pregnant. Women whose ovaries no longer produce eggs (e.g. women with primary ovarian failure) should not use this medication.
How do I take clomiphene?
Your clomiphene dosage will depend on your condition and response to treatment, so follow your doctor or pharmacist’s instructions carefully. One treatment cycle with clomiphene usually lasts five days and starts on the fifth day of your period. You will most likely ovulate between five and ten days after using this medication, and you should have sex during this window of time in order to improve your chances of becoming pregnant. If you do not become pregnant, you may need to use clomiphene for another treatment cycle. Do not use this drug for more than three treatment cycles without consulting your doctor; long-term use of this medication can increase your risk of developing an ovarian tumor.
Before taking clomiphene, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this or any other drugs
- You have unexplained vaginal bleeding
- You have an ovarian cyst (not caused by polycystic ovary syndrome) or primary ovarian failure
- You have or have had liver disease
- You have any adrenal gland or thyroid problems
- You have a pituitary gland tumor
- You have endometriosis or uterine fibroids
- You are breastfeeding or think you may be pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking clomiphene?
Clomiphene may cause headache, mild upset stomach, breast tenderness, hot flashes, dizziness, bloating, or breakthrough vaginal bleeding. If you have any of these side effects and they last a long time or get worse, tell your doctor. Stop taking your clomiphene pills and contact your doctor immediately if you experience unusual vision changes, increase sensitivity to light, pelvic pain, or heavy vaginal bleeding. You should also call your doctor right away if you have difficulty breathing, an irregular heart rate, sudden weight gain, severe stomach pain, or persistent nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, as these may be signs of a serious and potentially life-threatening condition.
What if I forget to take a dose of clomiphene?
It’s very important to stick to your dosage schedule while taking clomiphene; if you do miss a dose, call your doctor to find out what to do.
How do I store clomiphene?
Keep clomiphene in a tightly sealed container at room temperature, away from heat, light, and moisture. Do not store it anywhere that children or pets could access it. If you no longer need your medication or it has expired, contact your pharmacist to determine how to dispose of it safely.
What happens if I overdose on clomiphene?
Overdosing on clomiphene may cause vision problems, pelvic or abdominal pain, or persistent vomiting. If you or someone in your household has overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 to find out what to do.
Warnings
Because the clomiphene drug can cause blurred vision and dizziness, you should avoid driving and participating in other activities that require clear vision until you know how the medication affects you. Stop using this medication when you become pregnant, and contact your doctor right away if you think you may be pregnant. Fertility drugs such as clomiphene may increase your likelihood of having multiple births (e.g. twins, triplets).
Brand Names
Clomiphene is a generic drug that is also available under the brand names Serophene and Clomid. If your doctor prescribes either of the brand name forms, you can still use HelpRx to get a discount coupon.
