Cycloset Information:
What is Cycloset?
Cycloset (bromocriptine) is used alongside a healthy diet and regular exercise to control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. Although its mechanism of action is not fully understood, it has been shown to be effective in lowering blood glucose levels and reducing the risk of heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. It is not an effective form of treatment for type 1 diabetes.
How do I take Cycloset?
Take your prescribed dose of Cycloset once a day with food and within two hours of waking up, unless your doctor has given you different instructions. Your doctor should check your blood sugar levels regularly while you are using this medication and may adjust your dosage during periods of physical stress.
Before taking Cycloset, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Cycloset, or you have any other allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements, especially ergot or anti-psychotic medicines
- You have migraines that cause fainting, or you have ever fainted for any other reason
- You have type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis
- You have or have had low blood pressure
- You have a hereditary form of galactose intolerance or a lactase deficiency
- You have liver or kidney disease
- You have a pituitary gland tumor
- You have a stomach ulcer or have experienced any problems with stomach bleeding
- You have a personal or family history of mental illness
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Cycloset?
The most commonly reported side effects of the Cycloset drug include dizziness, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and low blood sugar. These side effects will usually go away on their own, but let your doctor know if any of them persist or get worse. Make sure you can identify the signs of high and low blood sugar, and keep a source of sugar readily available. Stop using Cycloset and tell your doctor right away if you have signs of dangerously high blood pressure, blood in your stools or vomit, vision problems, hallucinations, confusion, chest pain or difficulty breathing, back pain, swollen feet or ankles, difficultly urinating, uncontrollable muscle movements, or severe dizziness.
What if I forget to take a dose of Cycloset?
If you do not remember to take your Cycloset medicine within two hours of waking up, skip the dose and resume your normal dosage schedule the next morning. Do not double your dose to catch up.
How do I store Cycloset?
Store the Cycloset drug at or below 77 degrees Fahrenheit (room temperature); do not freeze. Do not store this medication in the bathroom, as heat, moisture, and bright light can negatively affect it. Keep Cycloset out of reach of children and pets, and talk to your pharmacist if you are unsure how to safely throw out expired medication.
What happens if I overdose on Cycloset?
Overdosing on the Cycloset drug can be very dangerous and may cause dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, hallucinations, nausea, vomiting, constipating, or fainting. If you or someone in your household has overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or go to the nearest emergency room.
Warnings
Ergot medicines, which are sometimes used to treat migraines, can interact with Cycloset, so avoid using any ergot medicine within six hours before or after taking this diabetes drug. Because Cycloset can cause dizziness and drowsiness, avoid driving or performing any other activities that require alertness until you know how the medication affects you.
Brand Names
There is currently no cheaper generic equivalent of Cycloset. The active ingredient of Cycloset—bromocriptine—is also found in the brand name drug Parlodel. However, Parlodel is not used to treat type 2 diabetes. To reduce the cost of Cycloset, take advantage of our printable discount coupons.
