Mirtazapine Information:
What is mirtazapine?
Mirtazapine is a NaSSA (noradrenegenic and specific serotonergic antidepressant) psychiatric drug that is used to treat depression. This medication works by acting on specific serotonin and adrenaline receptors in the brain involved in mood regulation. Mirtazapine produces fewer side effects than most other antidepressant drugs because it only acts on specific serotonin receptors rather than affecting them all. It also acts on a few of the dopamine receptors. Mirtazapine is proven to be one of the most highly effective antidepressants, and has outranked SSRIs and SNRIs in several studies. All antidepressants take several weeks to achieve maximum mood balance in a patient, but mirtazapine acts more quickly and can achieve results within a week. For this reason, it is recommended for suicidal patients.
How do I take mirtazapine?
Buy mirtazapine in your local pharmacy with a prescription from your doctor. This medication comes as a regular tablet or an orally-disintegrating tablet that dissolves on the tongue. To take the disintegrating tablet, make sure your hands are dry. Then pull back the foil covering one of the tablets and place it on your tongue. Do not push the tablet through the foil as it might break. This medication dissolves quickly and may be followed by a glass of water if desired. Mirtazapine is usually taken just before bedtime. Do not suddenly stop taking this medication. Talk to your doctor first and slowly reduce the use of this medication, as it may cause withdrawal symptoms if stopped abruptly.
Before taking mirtazapine, tell your doctor if:
- You are taking any vitamins or herbal supplements, especially St. John’s Wort and tryptophan.
- You are taking any prescription or nonprescription drugs including other antidepressants, blood thinners, antifungals, medications for migraine headaches, HIV medications, sleeping pills, and tranquilizers.
- You are allergic to mirtazapine or any of the other ingredients in this medication.
- You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast feeding.
- You have phenylketonuria (PKU).
- You have a history of other mental or mood disorders.
- You have low blood pressure or high cholesterol.
- You have a history of heart attack or heart, kidney or liver disease.
What are the possible side effects of taking mirtazapine?
Common side effects from taking mirtazapine include constipation, dry mouth, sleepiness, increased appetite. Less common side effects include weakness, dizziness, weight gain, raised triglyceride levels, a disturbance in thinking, a low white blood cell count, headache and fluid retention.
What if I forget to take a dose of mirtazapine?
If you miss a dose of mirtazapine, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of mirtazapine to make up for a missed one.
How do I store mirtazapine?
Store mirtazapine properly closed in its original container or package. Keep this medication away from children and pets. Store it between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit and keep away from moisture, heat, and light.
What happens if I overdose on mirtazapine?
Signs of overdose on mirtazapine may include accelerated heart rate, confusion, memory problems, and drowsiness. If you or someone you know has overdose on mirtazapine, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unconscious or not breathing, contact 911.
