What is Novolin R?
Novolin R is regular insulin prescribed, along with diet and exercise, to treat Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in those who cannot control it with oral medications. It is takes the place of insulin in those whose bodies do not produce enough.
How do I take Novolin R?
Novolin R is dispensed in a vial and administered through subcutaneous injection. Before using this medication the first time, ask your healthcare provider to demonstrate the proper technique, and then monitor your first injection; discuss with your doctor the best location for an injection. Use only syringes rated for this particular product. Be sure to follow your doctor’s diet and exercise program. Novolin R will not cure diabetes; continue to use it even if you feel well. Discuss with your doctor guidelines for checking your blood sugar levels. Do not stop using it without your doctor’s written permission.
Before taking Novolin R, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to insulin or any of the ingredients in the Novolin R drug

What are the possible side effects of taking Novolin R?
Some people have reported side effects after taking Novolin R. Less severe symptoms include changes in skin texture, constipation, skin depressions, redness, swelling, and itching at the injection site, skin thickening, or weight gain. Contact your doctor if these conditions persist or worsen. Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction, tachycardia, arrhythmia, bradycardia, blurred vision, dizziness, sudden and rapid weight gain, muscle cramps, shortness of breath, sweating, swelling of the extremities, weakness, and wheezing.
What if I forget to take a dose of Novolin R?
Before you begin using Novolin R, ask your doctor for written instructions regarding the protocol in the event you forget to take a dose at the scheduled time.
How do I store Novolin R?
Keep unopened vials of Novolin R under refrigeration; do not freeze this drug or use any that has been frozen. Opened vials should be stored in the refrigerator, but they can be stored temporarily at room temperature, in a cool place that is away from heat and direct sunlight. Dispose of any unused, tainted, or expired quantities according to the instructions of your pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Novolin R?
If an overdose of the Novolin R drug is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. An overdose of Novolin R can cause hypoglycemia, which can cause seizures and unconsciousness.
