Ortho Cyclen Information:
What is Ortho-Cyclen?
Active Ortho-Cyclen pills contain .25mg of norgestimate (progestin) and .035mg of ethinyl estradiol (estrogen). Each pack of Ortho-Cyclen contains 21 active pills and 7 inactive pills. These hormones work together to prevent pregnancy by stopping ovulation, thickening cervical mucous and changing the lining of the uterus to prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg. In addition to birth control, these pills may be prescribed to help control hormonal acne in women.
How do I take Ortho-Cyclen?
Start taking Ortho-Cyclen pills on the first day of your period, or after you have finished your last pack of birth control pills. You may have to use backup contraception, such as a condom, for seven days depending on your situation. Ask your doctor how long you should use backup contraception. Decide which time of day is easiest for you to remember to take your pill. One Ortho-Cyclen pill should be taken at the exact same time every day. Take the pills in order. Once you have used the 21 active pills and start taking the inactive pills, you will get your period. If you do not have a period, call your doctor.
Before taking Ortho-Cyclen, tell your doctor if:
· You have ever had a blood clot or a clotting disorder.
· You might be pregnant or you are breastfeeding.
· You have migraine headaches.
· You have high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
· You regularly smoke cigarettes.
· You have ever had a stroke or heart attack.
· You have ever had breast cancer, breast lumps or any cancers of the reproductive system.
· You have a history of depression or mental illness.
· You have liver disease.
· You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Ortho-Cyclen pills.
· You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications or herbal supplements, including antibiotics, anticonvulsants, St. John’s wort, antidepressants, HIV medications, or any others.
What are the possible side effects of taking Ortho-Cyclen?
Common side effects from taking Ortho-Cyclen include nausea, breast tenderness, vomiting and headache. Changes in weight, vaginal discharge, spotting, and dark spots on the skin may also occur. If any of these side effects are severe or persistent, tell your doctor. Serious side effects that should be addressed immediately include chest pain, migraines, jaundice, sudden numbness or tingling on one side of the body, abdominal pain, confusion, depression and swelling in the hands, legs, feet or groin.
What if I forget to take a dose of Ortho-Cyclen?
If you miss one Ortho-Cyclen pill, take the missed pill as soon as you remember and continue on your normal regimen. If you miss two pills in week one or two, take two pills when you remember and two pills at your normal time the following day. Use backup contraception for seven days. If you miss 2 or more pills in week three or if you miss three active pills at any time, use backup contraception and call your doctor. You will probably need to start a new pack of pills.
How do I store Ortho-Cyclen?
Keep your Ortho-Cyclen pills in a place where you are most likely to remember to take them at the same time every day. Keep the pills at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit, and keep them out of direct light.
What happens if I overdose on Ortho-Cyclen?
Ortho-Cyclen overdose may result in side effects. See the side effects section for more details. There have been no reports of serious adverse effects from overdose. If someone accidentally ingests a large amount of Ortho-Cyclen pills, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Hormonal contraceptives such as Ortho-Cyclen can result in an increased risk of developing blood clots and having a stroke or heart attack, especially if you are over the age of 35 and smoke. It may also increase your risk of developing breast cancer and other cancers of the reproductive system.
