Starlix Information:

What is Starlix?

Starlix is a glinide drug. It is used to help control blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. It works by causing the body to produce more insulin and properly process glucose. It’s just one part of a complete type 2 diabetes treatment plan, and it’s most effective when used alongside a healthy diet and regular exercise.

How do I take Starlix?

Take your Starlix dose before each main meal, no more than 30 minutes before you plan to eat. If you miss a meal, do not take this medication. Check your blood sugar regularly in order to ensure that your Starlix dose is effective.

Before taking Starlix, tell your doctor if:

You are allergic to nateglinide (the active ingredient in Starlix)
You have any other allergies
You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
You have type 1 diabetes (i.e. your body can’t produce insulin)
You are in a state of diabetic ketoacidosis
You have liver disease
You have gout
You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Starlix?

Starlix may cause weight gain, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, back pain, or cold-like symptoms. If you have any side effects that last a long time or concern you, let your doctor know. Serious side effects are rare, but it is possible for this medication to cause jaundice (i.e. yellowing skin or eyes) or seizures. If you have either of these adverse effects, call your doctor immediately.

What if I forget to take a dose of Starlix?

Because Starlix is taken with meals, you should only take a missed dose if you remember it before you eat. If you have already eaten, wait until your next meal to take your next dose. Do not increase your dose in an effort to catch up.

How do I store Starlix?

Store Starlix at room temperature (as close to 77 degrees Fahrenheit as possible). Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit is acceptable. As with all prescription drugs, keep Starlix out of reach of children and pets. If you no longer need this medication or it has expired, ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of it.

What happens if I overdose on Starlix?

Overdosing on Starlix can be dangerous and may cause a rapid heart rate, excessive sweating, agitation, vision changes, difficulty speaking, stomach pain, tremors, fainting, or seizures. If you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed, get emergency medical attention.

Warnings

Limit alcohol consumption while taking Starlix, since alcohol can make certain side effects worse. The Starlix medicine can cause fluctuations in your blood sugar levels, so make sure you know the warning signs of both high and low blood sugar. Always carry a quick source of sugar (such as a piece of fruit or hard candy) with you in case your blood sugar drops too low. If you have signs of high or low blood sugar, tell your doctor, as your dosage may need to be adjusted.

Brand Names

Starlix is a brand name drug. Nateglinide is its FDA-approved generic equivalent. Nateglinide is usually less expensive, so ask your doctor if it’s possible to switch to the generic form. Use HelpRx to find coupons for Starlix, nateglinide, or any other diabetes medications that you need.
