Trulicity Information:
What is Trulicity?
Trulicity is the brand name of the diabetes medication dulaglutide, a GLP-1 hormone agonist. It is prescribed, in conjunction with diet and exercise, to help control and improve blood sugar levels in those with Type 2 diabetes. It may also be prescribed for use with certain oral diabetes medications. Trulicity is not for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes.
How do I take Trulicity?
Trulicity is an injectable diabetes drug, usually administered once a week using a pre-filled pen. It is recommended that this medication be taken on the same day every week. The injection sites include the stomach, thigh, or upper arm; never mix the injection solution with other medications. Change the injection site with each dose. Do not use the medication if it is cloudy or contains particulate matter. If you are not accustomed to using an injection pen, ask your healthcare provider for assistance.
Before taking Trulicity, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to dulaglutide or any of the ingredients in the Trulicity drug
- You are taking and prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any oral medications
- You are taking insulin or other medications to treat diabetes
- You have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2) or there is a family history of this
- You have, or there is a family history of, medullary thyroid carcinoma
- You have diabetic ketoacidosis
- You have, or have had, pancreatitis
- You have, or have had, severe stomach problems, GERD, or problems with digesting food
- You have, or have had, liver or kidney disease
What are the possible side effects of taking Trulicity?
Some individuals have reported side effects after injecting Trulicity. Mild side effects include redness or swelling at the injection site, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, loss of appetite, or heartburn. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (hives, rash, itching, difficulty breathing) vomiting, a lump or swelling in the neck, or continuous pain in the upper left or middle of the stomach (that may also spread to the back).
What if I forget to take a dose of Trulicity?
If you miss a dose of Trulicity, take it as soon as you remember and are able. However, if fewer than three days remain until the next scheduled injection, skip the one missed and resume the normal schedule. Do not increase the quantity administered to make up for a missed dose.
How do I store Trulicity?
Keep the Trulicity drug in the refrigerator in its original container; take precautions to keep children from accidentally accessing the medication. This medication can be kept at room temperature for up to fourteen days if necessary. Do not allow Trulicity to freeze. Dispose of any unused, contaminated, or expired dosages according to the instructions of a pharmacist.
What happens if I overdose on Trulicity?
If an overdose of Trulicity is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has lost consciousness or stopped breathing, contact Emergency Services. Some signs of an overdose include symptoms of hypoglycemia, nausea, or vomiting.
Warnings
Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Trulicity may cause thyroid tumors or thyroid cancer. This drug may cause hypoglycemia.
