Binosto Information:

What is Binosto?

Binosto is the drug alendronate, a bisphosphonate calcium regulator prescribed to treat osteoporosis in post-menopausal women; it may also be prescribed to treat osteoporosis in men, in both men and women taking corticosteroids, and for those with Paget’s disease. It works by increasing bone density and preventing bone loss.

How do I take Binosto?

Binosto is administered as effervescent tablets that are dissolved in water then drunk. The standard dosing pattern is once a week, in the morning, at least 30 minutes prior to the first food, beverage, or medication of the day. Follow the dosing instructions that accompany this medication exactly. After taking Binosto, do not lie down, eat, or drink anything except water, or and avoid taking any other medications, vitamins, or supplements for at least 30 minutes. Your doctor may recommend a diet rich in calcium and Vitamin D.

Before taking Binosto, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to alendronate or any of the ingredients in the Binosto drug
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are undergoing radiation or chemotherapy for cancer
  • You have difficulties with sitting upright or standing for 30 minutes at a time
  • You have or have had cancer
  • You have ulcers
  • You have any infections
  • You have kidney disease
  • You have any blood clotting disorders
  • You have, or have had, low vitamin D levels, or anemia
  • You have, or have had, heartburn, stomach problems, mouth, teeth, or gum problems, periodontal disease, or difficulty swallowing
  • You have dental surgery scheduled

What are the possible side effects of taking Binosto?

Patients taking Binosto should be aware of possible side effects. Symptoms such as bloating, altered food taste, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, gas, headache, nausea, stomach pain, or swelling of the joints, hands, or legs should be monitored and reported if they persist or worsen. Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention have also been reported. These include black, bloody, or tarry stools; blistered or peeling skin; bloody vomit; chest pain; difficulty swallowing; vomit that looks like coffee grounds; dull or aching pain in the hips, groin, or thighs; eye pain; loose teeth; new or worsening heartburn; numb or heavy feeling in the jaw; painful or swollen gums or painful swallowing; slow healing of jaw injuries; or signs of an allergic reaction.

What if I forget to take a dose of Binosto?

If you miss your scheduled weekly dose of Binosto, take it at the same time the next morning, then resume the regular once-a-week schedule. Do not increase the amount taken or change the dosing pattern.

How do I store Binosto?

Keep Binosto tightly sealed in its original packaging, out of the reach of children and away from temperature and humidity extremes; bathroom storage is not recommended. Dispose of any unused or expired tablets according to the recommendations of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Binosto?

If an overdose of Binosto is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Overdose symptoms may include black, bloody, or tarry stools; bloody vomit; difficult or painful swallowing; stomach pain; vomit that looks like coffee grounds; heartburn; and nausea.

Binosto may cause osteonecrosis in the jaw as well as increasing the risk of a broken femur; contact your doctor immediately if you experience any pain in your legs or hips. This medication may cause severe bone, muscle, or joint pain. Binosto can linger in the body for years after treatment; contact your doctor if you become pregnant during or after treatment.
