Effient Information:

What is Effient?

Effient is a platelet inhibitor, taken along with aspirin to prevent patients with stents from suffering further cardiovascular incidents.  Effient binds with receptors to prevent platelets from clumping together and blocking arteries.

How does Effient work?

Effient works as an antiplatelet, a drug that will keep your platelets from forming a clot. Clots can block both your arteries and the stent installed during angioplasty surgery. Taken as a once daily pill, Effient thins your blood to keep platelets from clumping.

How do I take Effient?

Effient is prescribed as a pill. Once you’re prescribed Effient, get a coupon for 75% off your local pharmacy’s price from Help Rx. To take Effient, patients take an initial dose of 60 mg, and then continue with doses of 10 mg once a day. Doctors may prescribe a 5 mg dose for patients who weigh less than 60 kg. You can take Effient with or without food.

Before taking Effient, tell your doctor if you:

  • Have any bleeding problems.
  • Have had any kind of stroke, including a mini-stroke.
  • Are allergic to any medicines, especially clopidogrel (Plavix®) or ticlopidine hydrochloride (Ticlid®).
  • Have a history of stomach ulcers, colon polyps or diverticulosis.
  • Have liver problems.
  • Have kidney problems.
  • Have had any recent severe injury or surgery.
  • Have surgery or a dental procedure schedules.
  • Are pregnant or are planning to get pregnant. It is not known if Effient will harm your baby.
  • Currently breastfeed.

What are the possible side effects of taking Effient?

Taking Effient puts patients at an increased risk for bleeding. Effient puts you at risk for a blood clotting problem called Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP). If you have purplish spots called purpura on your skin or mucous membranes (such as the mouth), paleness or jaundice, feel tired or weak, have a fever, experience fast heart rate or shortness of breath, have a headache, speech changes, confusion, coma, stroke or seizure, have a low amount of urine, or urine that is pink-tinged or bloody, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, or visual changes, seek emergency medical help, as these symptoms may be a sign of a life-threatening condition.

Sometimes patients experience allergic reactions to Effient. Contact your doctor immediately if you have swelling or hives on your face, lips, in or around your mouth or throat, or have trouble breathing or swallowing, chest pain or pressure, or experience dizziness or fainting.

What if I forget to take a dose of Effient?

If you miss a dose of Effient, take it as soon as you remember that day. If you don’t remember until the following day, do not take a double dose in a single day. Take your regular daily dosage, unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Be sure to consult with your doctor if you miss a dose.

How do I store Effient?

Keep Effient at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit.  Make sure Effient pills remain stored in their original container.
