Plavix Information:

What is Plavix?

Plavix (clopidogrel bisulfate) is a platelet receptor inhibitor, specifically a thienopyridine class P2Y12 ADP receptor inhibitor. It can be prescribed alone or with aspirin, and acts as an antiplatelet drug, also called an anticoagulant. Plavix medication is prescribed to prevent blood cells from collecting into clots while treating peripheral arterial disease or other cardiovascular disorders, diseases, or problems.  Plavix uses also include preventing clots after heart surgeries or recent heart attack or stroke.

How do I take Plavix?

Depending on your medical history and cause of treatment, you may be prescribed an initial 300mg dose of Plavix. In most cases, you will take 1 75mg pill 1 time daily, either with or without food. Your medication is more effective if you take it regularly, so get your refill before you run out completely.

Before taking Plavix, tell your doctor if:

  • You are a CYP2C19 poor metabolizers, or you are unsure if you metabolize CYP2C19 correctly, as it may determine your therapy strategy.
  • You are allergic to other platelet-related medications (e.g., ticlopidine, ticagrelor, prasugrel).
  • You currently experience active bleeding (e.g., stomach ulcer, bleeding brain) or an IBD (e.g., ulcerative colitis).
  • You have a bleeding or clotting disorder.
  • You are taking any stomach acid reducers, especially: omeprazole, Prilosec, Nexium, esomeprazole.
  • You have a history of stroke, including TIA.
  • You are taking any other prescribed or over-the-counter medications, drugs, vitamins or supplements, including if you are already regularly taking aspirin or other NSAIDs, blood thinners, or antidepressants.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant or to breastfeed.

What are the possible side effects of taking Plavix?

Some Plavix side effects require immediate emergency medical assistance. These include: hives, jaundice, pale skin, heavy bruising or purple or red pinpoints under the skin, bleeding that will not stop, swelling in your face and lips, swelling in your tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, severe headache, problems with coordination or balance, difficulty speaking, vision problems, fever with weakness or sweating, chest pain or pressure which may spread to your shoulder or jaw,  sudden weakness or numbness, unusual bleeding from orifices (e.g., mouth, nose, rectum, vagina), coughing up blood, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, tar-colored or bloody stool.

Come Plavix side effects are: occasional nosebleed, mild headache or dizziness, feeling tired, stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea.

What if I forget to take a dose of Plavix?

Never take extra medication to make up for your missed Plavix dose. You may take your missed dose as soon as you remember it, unless it is almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose.

How do I store Plavix?

Store Plavix medication in a dry place at room temperature away from excess heat.

What happens if I overdose on Plavix?

Call your local poison control center or seek medical assistance. Unusual or heavy bruising or bleeding may be indicative.

Warnings

Plavix is an anticoagulant medication, which means that you may bruise or bleed more easily, even from minor injuries. You need to be careful not to injure yourself, including while shaving or brushing your teeth. If you feel you are bleeding or bruising too easily, call your doctor immediately. Drinking alcohol will increase your risk of active bleeding in your stomach or intestines while taking Plavix.

Your doctor will need to do blood tests to ensure this is the right medication for your therapy regime. Keep all doctor and lab appointments. If you are expecting to have surgery, even dental surgery, tell your surgeon that you are taking Plavix. Never discontinue this medication suddenly, even if you feel well or have no symptoms.

Brand Names

While there is a generic available - clopidogrel - Plavix is the only brand name medication for this drug. That means that the cost of Plavix is fairly hefty on the wallet. However, our Plavix coupons will let you save 93% on your local pharmacy's Plavix price. Simply click on Claim Discount to download or print your free Plavix coupon or Plavix discount card and start saving on your next Plavix refill cost.
