Escitalopram Information:

What is escitalopram?

Escitalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used for treating depression and generalized anxiety disorder. This class of medication works by blocking the reabsorption of serotonin in the brain. This then affects how chemical messages are sent and received by the brain in a specific way which has been shown to improve mood. Escitalopram is distinct from other types of SSRIs because of differences in its chemical makeup. However, escitalopram does have similar side effects to other SSRIs which can include nausea, nervousness, dizziness, reduced sexual desire and other effects. SSRIs like escitalopram are often the first drug therapy option used for treating depression.

How do I take escitalopram?

Escitalopram comes in both capsule and oral solution form. Available in strengths of 5mg, 10mg and 20mg, escitalopram tablets are taken once a day in the morning or the evening and can be taken with or without food. Escitalopram in its oral solution form is prescribed to patients who have difficulty swallowing tablets and is prescribed in similar dosages. The oral solution should be taken once daily in prescribed dosages and can be taken with or without food. Changes in depressive symptoms can be experienced as soon as after the first or second week of treatment.

Before taking escitalopram, tell your doctor if:

  • You have ever had kidney, thyroid, liver, or heart disease.
  • You are taking other prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins, or supplements, especially citalopram, blood thinners, antihistamines, NSAIDs, seizure or migraine medications, sleeping pills, sedatives, tranquilizers, cimetidine, metoprolol, antibiotics, tryptophan, St. John’s wort, and other medications for depression or mental illness.
  • You are taking or have stopped taking MAO inhibitors in the last 14 days.
  • You have recently had a heart attack.
  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding.

What are the possible side effects of taking escitalopram?

Side effects from taking escitalopram include headache, nausea, insomnia, drowsiness, yawning, fatigue, dry mouth, change in sex drive and ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, constipation, diarrhea, tremors, vertigo, change in appetite, restlessness, increased sweating, nasal congestion, and indigestion. If you experience a serious or unusual side effect such as hallucinations, confusion, elevated heart rate, fever, anxiety, or excitement, contact your doctor at once.

What if I forget to take a dose of escitalopram?

If you miss a dose of escitalopram, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it’s almost time for you next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of escitalopram to make up for a missed one.

How do I store escitalopram?

Keep escitalopram tightly closed in its original container and out of reach of children and pets. The ideal storage temperature for this medication is between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect your medication from light and moisture.

What happens if I overdose on escitalopram?

Fatal overdoses on escitalopram are rare. Signs of overdose include vertigo, convulsions nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, and coma. The use of alcohol and other drugs increases the chance for overdose. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on escitalopram, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unconscious or not breathing, call 911.
