Lescol Information:

What is Lescol?

Lescol is the drug fluvastatin, an HMG CoA reductase inhibitor. It is prescribed to help reduce the risk of a stroke, heart attack, and heart disease in those likely to develop heart disease. It may also be prescribed to help decrease LDL cholesterol and triglycerides in adults and in adolescents between 10 and 17 who have the inherited condition familial heterozygous hypercholesterolemia. It works by slowing cholesterol production that will build up on the walls of arteries and block blood flow to the heart and other areas of the body.

How do I take Lescol?

Lescol is dispensed in capsule form and taken orally, with or without food; dosing is either once or twice a day, depending on the patient profile. Swallow the capsule whole, with water; do not crush, chew, or split the capsule. Your doctor may also recommend a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet as well as an exercise regimen. Continue to take this medication even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Lescol without your doctor’s permission.

Before taking Lescol, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to fluvastatin or any of the ingredients in Lescol
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
  • You are taking spironolactone, glyburide, rifampin, colchicine, ranitidine, cyclosporine, phenytoin, diclofenac, fluconazole, digoxin, omeprazole, erythromycin, or ketoconazole
  • You are taking anticoagulants or other cholesterol-lowering medications
  • You have, or have had, liver, thyroid, or kidney disease
  • You have, or have had, diabetes, seizures, hypotension, or muscle aches or pains
  • You drink alcohol and your frequency of consumption
  • You are sixty-five or older

What are the possible side effects of taking Lescol?

Some people have reported side effects after taking the Lescol drug. Less severe symptoms include disorientation, coughing, sleep difficulties, headache, heartburn, forgetfulness or memory lapses, and sinus pain. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; hoarseness; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing), darkly colored urine, extreme fatigue, fever, flu-like symptoms, malaise, appetite loss, painful, weak, or tender muscles, nausea, pain in the upper right part of the stomach, unusual bleeding or bruising, or signs of jaundice.

What if I forget to take a dose of Lescol?

If you forget to take your scheduled Lescol medicine dose, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase dosage or change the regimen to make up for one that was missed.

How do I store Lescol?

Keep Lescol tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Dispose of any unused medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

What happens if I overdose on Lescol?

If an overdose of the Lescol medicine is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.
