Lipitor Information:

What is Lipitor?

Lipitor (atorvastatin calcium) is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (i.e., statin). It lowers LDL (bad cholesterol) by stopping the production of mevalonate, which is the rate-determining-step for cholesterol biosynthesis, and increases HDL (good cholesterol). It's indicated for treating risk of stroke or heart attack and lower the risk of developing heart disease as well as the potential need for heart surgery.  Lipitor is intended to be used by adults with coronary heart disease or other risk factors, or with type 2 diabetes.

How do I take Lipitor?

Before buying Lipitor, print our free Lipitor coupon or sign up for a discount card to reduce the cost when you fill your prescription. Take 1 tablet by mouth daily, and take your medication at the same time every day. It can be taken with food to avoid stomach upset. The dosage will be determined by your doctor according to your medical history and health. For full and complete Lipitor patient assistance and instructions, always refer to your doctor or pharmacist. This article is not intended to be a comprehensive medication guide.

Before taking Lipitor, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
  • You are taking birth control.
  • You are taking medication for the treatment of tuberculosis.
  • You are currently taking any antibiotics or antifungals or will need to take antibiotics.
  • You are taking any antidepressants.
  • You are taking any other heart or blood pressure medications or statins.
  • You have HIV/AIDS or are taking medication to treat HIV/AIDS.
  • You are taking any medications or supplements that include niacin.
  • You have received an organ transplant and are taking anti-rejection medication.
  • You have or have a history of cancer or are taking medication for cancer.
  • You are taking any steroid-based medications.
  • You have or have a history of kidney or liver disease, or thyroid disorders.
  • You have muscle pain or weakness, or have a disorder that causes muscle weakness.
  • You drink more than 2 alcoholic beverages daily.
  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications, drugs, vitamins, or supplements.

What are the possible side effects of taking Lipitor?

Some Lipitor side effects can be quite serious. Stop taking this medication and seek medical assistance if you experience: difficulty breathing, itching or hives, swelling in the face or tongue, other swelling or weight gain, sudden weight loss, unusual muscle pain or weakness, jaundice, fever, unusual drowsiness or somnolence,  unusual confusion or memory problems, blurred vision, unusually dry skin, dry mouth or increased thirst,  a fruity odor to your breath, sudden or unusual increase or loss of appetite, stomach pain, nausea, sudden increase or decrease in urination, inability to urinate, dark urine, or clay colored stool. Common Lipitor side effects include: mild pain, mild nausea, and diarrhea.

What if I forget to take a dose of Lipitor?

If it is less than 12 hours until you need to take your next dose, skip the missed dose. Otherwise, you may take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. Maintain your regular dosing schedule. Never take extra medication or a double dose of the Lipitor drug to make up for a missed dose.

How do I store Lipitor?

Keep this medication in the container it came in, and store somewhere out of reach of children that is safe from excessive heat, light, or moisture (e.g., a bathroom).

What happens if I overdose on Lipitor?

Warnings

This medication should be taken as a part of an overall heart health plan that includes weight control, exercise, and diet. Follow your doctor's instructions about what to eat or not to eat (e.g., high cholesterol foods),

You will need to temporarily stop taking Lipitor if you need surgery or if you become pregnant.

Brand Names

Lipitor is the brand name for the generic drug atorvastatin. It's the only brand for this drug, however, there are other combination drugs that include Lipitor (Caduet, Liptruzet). Because Lipitor is so specific, the brand can be quite expensive. Take advantage of our Lipitor discount today and claim your Lipitor coupon or Lipitor discount/savings card. Just click the Claim Discount link to get started. You can print or download our free Lipitor discount card for 65% off of the Lipitor retail price at your local pharmacy.
